    'Ashes' sold at garage sale

A woman in New York is in a spot of bother with her husband after accidentally selling the ashes of his first wife for 58 cents at a garage sale.

Anita Lewis sold the ceramic turtle jar containing the ashes of Terrence Lewis's first wife to a woman who planned to use it as a cookie jar, reports news.com.au

Mrs Lewis held the sale at the weekend while her husband was asleep in the house.

The large turtle container was quickly snapped up, despite the buyer not being able to get the lid off.

Mr Lewis's first wife had collected turtles and the couple's home was full of them, Mrs Lewis said.

"We have lots of turtles," she told the Elmira Star-Gazette newspaper. "It didn't even register that this was the one (containing the ashes)."

The couple hoped the woman would discover the ashes and return them.

    Psychic Cat Found Dead
PROVIDENCE, RI - Oscar, the nursing home cat who could seemingly sense the impending death of patients, was found dead early yesterday. The cat gained recent notoriety when reports of his ability to detect the impending death of the terminally ill became public. Seemingly aware that death was at hand, Oscar would reportedly climb into the bed of patients during their final hours.

Officials at the facility would not reveal the cause of death, but did acknowledge rumors that the cat was becoming increasingly unpopular among the patients. One knowledgeable source - who agreed to speak with us on the condition of anonymity - confirmed increasing animosity toward the animal, and that a dented bedpan was found near the body.

According to our source, the recent publicity of Oscar's unique insight spread quickly throughout the facility. Patients in the terminal ward became increasingly upset at the sight of the cat, prompting administrators to move Oscar to another floor. After an unexpected death on that floor, Oscar quickly became quite unwelcome there too. "Good riddance." said patient Gertrude Feinman, when told of the cat's demise. "It would just sit there and stare at you - with this look on his face like 'you're next'".

A spokesman for the home downplayed any immediate talk of foul play. "We don't want to jump to any conclusions." said Ronald Kitzmiller, Director of Operations at the facility. "We'll wait for the coroner's report, and then decide if any legal action is warranted."

I saw the news story of the cat.
But, I like how they're trying not to blame anyone for the animal's death.
"Regardless of the dented surgical steel bedpan found next to the cat's body, we have no evidence that the cat was killed."

It's like the people at the hospital don't want to acknowledge their own deaths. If I was in that building with a cat that predicted peoples' deaths, and it came to visit me...I'd be thankful, and I'd want my family to know so they could see me before I passed.

    But, anyway...

Octogenarian eager to see killer hubby

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - A 49-year-old man who bludgeoned his grandmother and great-aunt to death more than three decades ago left prison this week ready to settle down with his 88-year-old wife.

Frank Czumalowski wed Radmilla Dobrijevick on Jan. 31, 2006, the day he was sentenced to 2 1/2 years in prison for violating his probation on a decade-old conviction for sexually assaulting a 12-year-old girl.

Last year, Dobrijevick, who lives in Bridgeport, pledged in court that she would wait for Czumalowski.

His lawyer, Rob Serafinowicz, says she has.

"Frank Czumalowski has paid his debt to society and it's time for everyone to forgive him and welcome him back with open arms," Serafinowicz said. "This is a man who is working to better himself, who has a woman who is a good influence on his life, and hopefully, the two of them will be able to lead a life free of controversy and put everything that has happened behind them. I wish them the best of luck."

Thirty years ago, police say Czumalowski, then 19, bludgeoned his grandmother and great aunt to death as they huddled over the stove, preparing Easter dinner for him. He loaded their bodies into a wheelbarrow and buried them under their beloved rose garden.

Czumalowski was found not guilty by reason of insanity and released from a state psychiatric hospital after about six years. He told police at the time that he had taken LSD before the killings.

He was arrested in 1994 and convicted of two counts of first-degree sexual assault. He was released from prison in 2003 and placed on probation with the condition he undergo sex-offender treatment and stay away from children.

But he failed a lie detector test on whether he had been alone with a boy related to his landlady and was kicked out of his sexual behavior program for making threats. He also threatened his probation officer and told her that he would "revert back to his past criminal inclinations," according to an arrest warrant affidavit.

Just before Czumalowski was sent to prison last year, Dobrijevick defended her husband to the judge.

"He didn't want to kill a bug on the porch. I had to use my velvet slipper to kill the bug," she said. "He is a very unlucky person. I hope I will have a good life with him."

Czumalowski was released from prison Thursday after serving 1 1/2 years.

    Pike attacks swimmers

A lake in Austria has been closed to swimmers because a giant pike nicknamed 'jaws' has been putting the bite on bathers.

Local anglers have posted a reward to catch him but so far the wily fish has remained off the hook.

In the latest incident a 45-year-old woman who was paddling in the shallows found the fish clamped to her leg.

Margot Withers, 45, said: "It chased me all the way to the bank biting my leg. I had to have stitches in the hospital. It was terrible."

Local authorities in Badesee Wildenau in Upper Austria have now told people to stay out of the water until anglers can catch it.

Fisherman Franz Mettmach said: "There have been a lot of people bitten. It's the warm weather that has made the fish aggressive, when it gets cooler he will probably calm down if he hasn't been caught."

Church bans broadband over porn fears

A church in southern Sweden has refused to allow a wireless broadband antenna to be installed on its tower, after fears were raised that parishoners would stay home surfing for porn instead of attending services.
The proposal to install broadband equipment at the church in Hylletofta, 200 kilometres east of Gothenburg, would have brought high speed internet access to the community, where residents currently have to struggle with dial-up connections. But the Church of Sweden decided that the ability to download high quality images and videos could harm the morals of the local population.
"The diocese has formally taken the position that this type of equipment would cause trouble, and could even lead to some people not coming to church," said Torbjörn Sjögren, curator for the Diocese of Växjö, to TV4 Jönköping.

Of course they can refuse it IF it is their property, but then they should have used a better reason.

this is the kind of idiocy that makes normal religious folk look bad. "oh noes! teh interweb is home to teh pr0n!!!111"

as if all the men in that town didn't already get their porn from the nearest liquor store. if their parishners use porn, they already have a collection of it at home, and broadband access is not going to change anyone's habits.

I keep seeing a concern over a drop in parishioners.
Less people in church means less money in the collection plate.

I love how atheists are all child molesters.

It's true, I heard about an atheist who molested a child once.
