Hoho - indeed it is. MegaCity4 was the name of a baggy band I was into for a little while about 10 years ago.

My perfect law system would include compassion, as most real ones do. The law cannot be blind, since it needs to evolve as society does. If that wasn't the case, every able-bodied man in England would still be required to practice archery every Saturday afternoon.

But he IS human. It is the fact he acts with absolute integrity that causes me to see him as sad and lonely. As I said, I think he is a slave to his principles, which is admirable (in some ways) but not (I would imagine) very enjoyable.

I have to agree with you that the character in the film had no depth and the plot wrote his motivations in BIG LETTERS to make sure noone got confused. I liked it despite those flaws.

I'd have to disagree with you on that. But let's not get into that here (I also haven't seen Judge Dredd, so I can't make much more of a contribution).

Why would you have a problem with that? Then you guys would do much better in archery events at competitions.

Well, it would mean I could never take a holiday that last longer than 6 days, for one thing.

Take your bow and arrows with you. Problem solved.

The law was that you had to report to the buttes for practice. I suppose I could take that with me. I'd be able to say "Right, I'm off on holiday, so I'll get my butte outa here."

Maybe so. But I think that you are forgetting that Mega City isn’t an utopia; it’s Hell on Earth. Life isn’t worth crap; the population is viewed as a hindrance to the government hence the Suicide Parks, where people are encourage to kill themselves in order to lighten society’s burden. Poverty is almost absolute, with a few islands of richness; there is no compassion in the world. The city itself is a fortress that ignores the outside world, only tries to defend itself from any interference, and never tries to help anyone. Again, no compassion. It’s the land of the most savage capitalism. Fortunes are made and lost in a few hours. While you are rich, you can live in (relative) safety and comfort and have society’s respect; if you loose your money you loose it all. The only thing you can’t buy is the Judges; after all the system does work. Art is just a way to make money; the city itself is the ugliest place to live anyone can think of.
Mega City is our worst nightmare; and Dredd its greatest defender.
East City although follows(ed) a slightly different logic is (at least) as awful as Mega City.
Ps1: in ‘perfect’ I mean things like incorruptible, ie the system is not subject to human failure (this being represented by Dredd’s invincibility and (in my opinion) inhumanity (remember he ‘has’ no face))
Ps2: sorry for the delay, it’s been a bit hard to post these days

Edit addendum: I can’t believe that we are the only ones here that have read Judge Dredd?

    I getcha, and agree.

I shouldn't think we are. We seem to be the only ones wanting to talk about how well the comic fit the film, though.
