I know it's not paradise city but if TA has admin vacancy I would be happy to fill it.
Although I have to agree with Calis that making other forums is pointless
I have to hope for his good heart

    Jinxed,

If, IF I'm going to make you a moderator, it will not be because of my good heart. It'll be because I am, at that point, convinced you'll make a good moderator (and you want the job). Nothing more, nothing less. And like I've said before, that'll need some more thought (and possibly discussion with the other staff members). While I appreciate the presence of all you regulars, I'm not going to reward you by handing out positions of power. Sorry. Stuff like that can really bring a board (or a fan site) down, and I'm not prepared to do that to this board.

I know, I was just kidding didn't you see the rolling eyes? I though that statement would lift the mood.
Anyway, I'm here long enough for you to know if I am good for it or not, so I will just shut up and wait for your answer.

I know, but I thought I'd make it clear anyway, I really don't want to be buried under a stream of requests for admin status.

Calis one more point. I have been known to post crazy stuff that has little relevance except to just point out something I found odd. I will admit that posting the link was wrong but at the time I was just throwing in extra crap. My problem was I was thinking of myself as a regular considering I was posting here before I was a staff member of that other site and I had been slowly working my way back into this site. I hardly ever post something that does not at least have a little worthless part to it.

    To quote Jinxed

Now to the new topic at hand, I have noticed that being a Mod can be really easy or really hard. Most of the smaller boards seem to almost Moderate themselves. Out of the 3 major Arcanum boards I visit regularly the Inn, with several problems at times, was the only on ever to have any active moderation. To my knowledge Calis has never banned anyone if this is still true then all the other boards just required editing of posts (remember the warez days) and a few posts may have been moved to a spoiler board.

Now I have seen some boards even many of the Vault Network boards that were badly in need of moderation, though. I would not moderate them for any amount of money. It seems to me that the Arcanum community is one of the friendliest so there is less need for constant moderation.

P.S. I still have not got any sleep. It’s been 26 hours 30 minutes. I am feeling more coherent than I did earlier though.

apart from my argument in the US attack thread and the Combat 18 incident, there has been no serious trouble here. couple of before game release questions that were locked among one or two spam threads.

hehe, If Ton went around locking pointless threads we would both have around 10 posts. You might only have a few more yourself. What happened to the US attack thread? I vaguely remember at least the beginnings of that one. And I have no clue about the combat 18 thread. I do remember several locked threads though, during the high spam era. [IMG]

edit: my smiley did not work let me try one of my own.

 And to think, I didn't even mention the hate mail.

    "daer adming,

u r fukin f4g0rt and u sight sux0rz!!!1 and why you dind't give me custom avatar?!!!1 OMG, WTF?! can I be a mod now?!!1 or just give me FTP addy and pass. UR SUX LUVU KTHXBYE"

    *sigh* Those were the days...

Heh, you forgot the people who just want access to the (oooh!)Staff Forum(aaah!). :p It's funny how regular members can build it up to be some sort of message board Nirvana where all the cool shit happens. Where all the admins and mods huddle around and talk shit about the lowly members.

I remember I made some guy a mod once, and the first (and last) thing he posted in the staff forum went something like:

"THAT'S IT? That's all you guys do in here? Post bug fixes and forum updates?"

That jerk actually went MIA after posting that! Never saw him again. Lesson, choose staff wisely. But, as you point out farther down in the thread, you already know that.

in the US attack, some guy was saying that the US did well dropping the nuclear bombs on Japan, he basically said Afghanistan should be bombed to hell for what they did. Calis had to brake it up.
Comabat 18 is a name of a neonazi organisation, a guy claiming to be from Singapore had it, and someone took offence from it. The guy said that it has nothing to do with it, and that its the age he goes to the army in Singapore so its Combat. He changed it to Kombat and never returned.
that Combat was quite an affair. Good it turned out well. It just proves not all people are deprived of any logical reasoning.

I think it depends on how strict and sane the members of the staff are. Although, you never make fun of someone when they can't see what you said. What is the fun of that.

That's quite an experience you had there Milo. But seriously do you think I qualify? Would I go MIA after finding out that Calis is not running his underground slave factory through the staff forum? you are a regular so what do you think?

First off, I didn't mean to imply that you would act like that guy, Jinxed. If it came off that way, it wasn't my intention, and I'm sorry.

Anyway, what do I think? Personally, I think you'd make decent mod. You are around alot, and you read all the threads. You don't put up with Ioo's shit, and I get the feeling if you were a mod, you'd do something about him bashing the newbies. I think that's a good thing. I get the feeling like you'd let the lighthearted stuff slide, like when threads go off-topic, but wouldn't let the hardcore non-sensical spam go. If I was an admin, I'd give you a trial period, and if at the end you still wanted to do it, I'd probably give you the job.

It might be a moot point, though, because we don't even know if there's going to be a modship up for grabs. But even if there were, and you were under serious consideration, the important thing is whether you would want the responsibility. I sure as hell wouldn't. I like coming here and posting.

Consider this. Look at the minor problems that this board has. Like YeaYea2001 digging up old topics in Hints&Tips. As it stands, the forum self-regulates and the problem will eventually go away, maybe with some hurt feelings. But if you were a mod, then people would start complaining to you, demanding that you do something about YeaYea2001. At the same time, YeaYea's complaining to you, demanding that you get all these other members off his back. See, now it's your problem. You don't want to bug the admins about it, because they brought you in for the purpose of handling shit like this so they can concentrate on the site. So then you have to decide what to do, and you have to do something. If you just let it everything go, then why have a mod in the first place? If you take one side over the other, then you open the door to more complaints and hard feelings from members that you might have been friendly with before you were a mod.

My point with all this is it seems like it would a cool thing until you actually do it. It's a thankless job. Some members may start resenting you because they feel like they should have been picked instead. Some people won't kid around with you as much as they used to because they're afraid of "pissing off a mod".

But of course, your mileage may vary. Some people love being mods. I don't. Being an admin is even worse. Probably worst of all is being an admin with no mods to watch the forums for you.

well the way I see it is that not much would change in my posting style except I would have to refrain myself from answering all the newbie questions and let you guys handle it and if you don't I would answer it. what I see is that there is a mod shortage in TA since the mods except Calis just don't do anything. Threads off topic that should be moved to the spoiler section are not moved and general topics should moved from the spoiler section. That means that either the mods don't care which is wrong or they are not here which is wrong too. And as Calis said he is the only mod/admin thats pretending to be here. as said he is also an admin. I don't know the entire situation, but this is how I see it.
When a mod is never posting the forum is also kinda weird. You could also say that I spend alot of time here, might aswell put that time into more use and moderating the board since noone else is doing it.
I post on other forums and I know what kinda attitude is toward TA. Its good. I want to make it better.
this forum alsmost turned to crap in the loo spamming period, even I was discouraged to post, so think of what the newbie impression was. I just want to keep that from happening again. I like this forum too much too see someone like loo spamming it and insulting everyone.

That's not entirely true, I banned those two bastards who hacked the forum a while ago. (remember those disgusting pictures? Ugh... good thing I caught it relatively soon...)

Oh and Mortimer, I realize I probably came off harsh... it's just that this thing is a bit of a pet peeve o' mine. And yeah, I do still see you as a regular besides a TD staff member (hell, I check TD's forum myself, once every while).

They did not deserve to be banned. :p I would not consider that banning someone they were not actually members, and they really did not post the picture. They put it at the top of the site and not on a board.

Didn't I create the thread at the inn telling you that you had a little problem over here when that happened? Did you ever find out how they were able to get in the system? I think I remember you saying that you were changing the passwords but I do not remember if you found out how they got in.

Yes, a nasty security exploit there that allowed them to change a certain field in the user database giving themselves "admin" status. The exploit is fixed now though, so nobody's coming in that way anymore.

They were much dirtier than porn. Let’s just leave it at that.
