    Easy. Configure the firewall not to block the port on which irc works. 6667 or 6668.

    Tell him you want to free up the port because of some program which dloads news or because you need to connect to an FTP that only works on these ports. Even better, tell him you subsribed by email to a graphical newsletter and it needs to connect to the page everytime you check the mail (the pics need the connection) and it only works on the said ports. Seriously man, there is alot of excuses available at your disposal.
