Last I checked "shut the fuck up" was a tad more insulting than "Whatever", and I agree, it's not high on the flaming scale, but it's not like I was trying to flame you.

However, that's all that's important in a flame war - one-upping the insults the other guy throws out. Telling you to shut the fuck up accomplished that.
