I expect that he will begin to talk at some point. He wasn't tough enough to try to fight his way out of the Spider Hole (or maybe not dumb enough), and he just seems to be a coward in general, so they will probably get him to talk at some point. Perhaps they'll let some CIA interrogater to be alone with him, and then he'll talk.

I found it amusing that George W Bush claimed that when Saddam burned his oil fields he considered it a war crime. Hidden Agenda?

Also whenever the US economy hits a low, start a war and PRESTO!! , I mean look at the stock market and more specifically gold prices now. Who do you think is going to win the next election, Eh?

OK, first, Sleek, I never said he was a good guy, or nice, or didn't gas the Kurds. Jesus, did you read my post, or just reply with what you usually say when you hear people say the Iraqi people might not actually be welcoming US troops across the board?

The point is there is more complexity than tyrant/not tyrant or liberator/not liberator. Sunni Muslims generally did well under Saddam. Some didn't, but those who kept their mouths shut ended up comfortable, rich, even educated and smewhat free. Only Sunni intellectuals seem to actually be anti-Saddam, and that's basically because they seem to have exercise their empathy muscle on their fellow Iraqis. Shi'ites were and are anti-Saddam, but they have this annoying little habit of being seriously anti-American fundamentalists who often support Al Qaeda -- unlike Saddam, for all his faults. The Kurds and Turkmen in the north loath Saddam, especially as it was them he gassed. But the Turkmen are annoyed by not being mentioned for fear of annoyng the Kurds, and the Kurds want to attack Turkey. Also there are all the foreign "muslim brotherhood" types from around the muslim world who get off on shooting Americans. They are exacerbating the situation , and normal Iraqis are blaming the Americans for not taking care of things. The Americans and Brits are constantly losing popularity (except for this little spike, and that's all it is) among the Iraqis for not keeping peace and supplying basic services. There are a lot of cries of "well, at least we had water back then." It's hard to be free when you are thirsty. So they're pissed. The only group of people who seem willing to endure any hardship are those whose friends or family were directly affected by Saddam. As many of those as there are, they are still in the minority. And then there's theowunded pride hting. Much as many Iraqis hated Saddam, he was the only remaning symbol of Arab strength. He stood up to the world, to America. And now he's down, and they feel like their whole civilization has lost the game. So there's anger there.

Remember, even Bush warned that this arrest would not end the violence.

For those of you who have seen the video "Bum Fights: Volume 1"

I think Saddam looks just like Rufus the Stunt Bum.[/i]

Yes, I have. I thought the movie was awful slow at first, but it did get some better. I particularly liked the actor who played Stonewall Jackson, and the scene where he shed tears over the news of the little girls death was touching. Also southern-pride stirring, was the scene in which Jackson tramped his horse back and forth along a line of soldiers, and said, "Lincoln told us to raise three armies. You go and tell him WE HAVE DONE SO!!" Oh, yeah. Almost had me loadin' me musket.

Yeah, it made me want to go hang a Confederate flag on the flagole and spray-paint a one on the Buddy Leche sign. It seems that most of the movie is about Stonewall, you know. Wasn't Ted Turner one of the people who made it? He's supposed to be an athiest too.

The book was better. You shouldn't be watching trashy film. Pick up the book and read.
You should have READ Gods and Generals.
You should have READ The Killer Angels.
Stop supporting my damn stereotype of all southerners being idiots.
If you want to talk about works on the civil war, The Killer Angels is what it is all about.

Waiting for my brother-in-law to finish the books, so I can read them.

Oh, and yes, Ted Turner also played a part in the movie. If you go to the scene where there were men seated, theater style, around a man and maybe a woman dancing? singing? Ted Turner is seating pretty much front and center. He even sings.

As for him being an atheist, I don't know, but I wouldn't be surprised.

Put two and two together guys...

The weapons of mass destruction don't exist. This war's main reason was a hoax. Think about it, America needed support and that's why they cooked up a story. But hey, it's the same thing as it happened in the previous war. The Pentagon stated that spy satellites detected a LARGE Iraqi force on the boarder of Kuwait READ TO ATTACK. Guess what, those pics of the supposed force were never published, only a post war statement was made that "Umm, it's possible that we miscalculated the said force".

And another thing, while America claimed Iraq is misleading the weapon inspectors, they do have COMPLETE and total access to all of Iraq now and guess what? "We can't find shit captain".

Get real people. I know Saddam is a bastard, but the reasons and motivations surrounding both wars are questionable to say the least.

I have the same opinion. Don't worry about the "conclusive evidence". Some will be fabricated soon.

Hands up people who care and can actually make an impact on the situation.

    Yeah, I thought so.

Fuckin' A, Jarinor. Damn, I like you more and more all the time.

Also, your sig is the most hilarious piece of Monty P's dialouge ever. I've tried explaining it over and over to my wife why that shit is funny. She just doesn't quite get it.

Yeah, in light of that I think I'll close down the forum. After all, everything we discuss doesn't have any impact on anything and I don't expect to see Bush posting on HoL any time soon.

Hey, I'm not saying you can't write what you think about it. I'm just of the opinion that if you can't do anything about something, why bitch about it? Assuming of course it's a widely known problem like earthquakes really messing the landscape up, not how you only slept with that hooker one time, but now you get these weird warts every so often...

But yeah, I'm apathetic and fatalistic, which leads to me not caring about things which I can in no way influence.

Make her watch the movie. If she sees the movie and still doesn't get it, then I pity you. Many a laugh will not be shared in your household.

Oh for fuck's sake guys, are we still talking about this? Its already over as far as i'm concerned. This Saddam thing is going to turn into just another high glam celebrity trial, and we all know some rich celebrity lawyer is gonna get saddam off scott free. He'll be in the caymens or back in hollywood by next july. I mean come on, we dont put people of high stature like him in prison! People won't even notice anyway. The iraqi press is probably more concerned with michael jackson's upcoming trial, just like the slightly lesser quality (much less than the average american) people they are.

This s OJ alllllllll over again

    <edit>(this was a joke)

Given that Slobodan Milosevic is still on trial at the Hague, I doubt Saddam is going to be free in 6 months.
