I also wondered this as it is incredibly simple to create other trap protos. I've made new traps of each type, apart from the arrow trap, and it only required changing one script number.
The arrow trap is a special case because, unlike all other traps, it requires a preset trap source.

I don't suppose you'd be kind enough to post those somewhere?

Yes...definately post that stuff...It'll make the game more tactical......

    I wonder....

Is it possibl to rig an explosive to an arachnid or automaton and make them walk towards to wards an enemy to explode...or will they turn and attck you if you do so?

Yes Yes I know its expensive damage delivery but I wonder if doing so to the cheaplky made Clockwork Decoys wouldn't work better than the explosive decoys which never realy worked for me anyway...

Crossbow.....bow interesting...a firearm that uses arrows for ammo......

were you thinking: Handcrafted Flintlock + Short Bow?

Oh and I found osmething interesting near Shrouded Hills...a few dead cows and chickens with a bucnh of Arcahnids hanging around....but nothing else.

And by the way...if they make your crossbow they'll have to make my Jack In the Box

Jack in the Box: Large Spring + Skull

Create and drop near someone (keeping followers away). Anyone going to pick it up will trigger it causing the skull to pop out and scare the bejeesus outta them. 20% base chance of fainting.

I'm not the first one to wish that Arcanum had crossbows. Just the latest one to want one. As for what I was thinking about the crossbow schematic - why not use a gun chassis and a short bow? There doesn't seem to be any other use for the chassis.

The spider's den at Shrouded Hills, by killing the arachnids, I have gotten a single thank you from the herbalist, but that's the only response so far. Did you find the folders I mentioned at Althea's place?

And I love the jack-in-the-box! I'd have to try that on Constable Owens...

They are part of my big hack which I will release...eventually.
It would be quite a bit of work to separate them out from the main hack as I'm having to write some very big, cumbersome trader scripts.

To make a crossbow schematic would be easy.
To make the item look like a crossbow in the inventory would be easy.
To make the item look like a crossbow when it is being fired would be almost impossible. It would require hundreds of new images, compressed into one of the special art files.

I await the release of that hack with great anticipation.

As for the crossbow art; in Ultima - The False Prophet, crossbows the big weapon. Given that the game has since been - what's the term? - converted from cartridge to computer driven, perhaps the artwork is laid out in a similar enough fashion to allow the creation of working graphics for Arcanum. Let me see what I can find.

I forgot to say, the explosive decoy was never completed. They created a proto for it which was identical to the clockwork decoy. They seemed to just give up on it and it wasn't completed for the patch.
There are so many examples of unfinished things in this game it's a bit annoying.
The good news is, I've fixed it. So that'll be in the hack too.

To be honest the chances of that working are slim to none.

So far you are correct. After a couple hours of searching last night, I was forced to conclude that the computer version of that game is hopelessly inadaquate for what I was thinking. Just off the top of your head, could you recomend a role-playing game with crossbows that are similar enough to the art style and viewing angle of Arcanum?

Look, I think that had they made a proper pose for the looking glass rifle, you could have something to work from.

Wouldn't it be possible to use the animation sprites for the bow, but turn then 90º so it fires "on its side" sortaspeak and then pop each frame onto the anim for a regular rifle.

You'll still get the arrow coming off the bow, whi makes sense and the smoke puff at the end of the rifle but at least its a theoretical start

There's a thought. Even though the gun is shot from the hip, that could possibily work. A little cut and paste for the bow action, and voila! If the puff of smoke is included in the art of the firing gun, perhaps it could be painted out.

I'll unpack one or two of the rifle art files tonight and take a look.

4-19-06 This might take a little longer than I thought...

OK so I like hAcked an earky save and changed my race to Half Orc to check out the Half Orc Village.

Boy those people sound retarded...."HEllo Half-Orc friend"...

I talked to the healer and while she was friendly and all...I didn't get the option for her to join me.

Also, I only now found the Ship storage area....now I can finally organise my crap so that I don't have to split things between Vooriden, LIam's Workshop and Plough's Warehouse!

Yeah, having the ship does help a lot. Personally, I think all those chests are a bit much; it tends to spoil you on keeping your inventory low. Secondly, I find the order a little off. i.e. the magical armor chest in the center of the room instead of beside the rest of the armor chests.

But still, it's a damned sight better that the alternatives!

I've still not found the right files to make a reasonable crossbow. The search continues.

BTW - While you were in Shrouded Hills, did you happen to notice the little addition Chris made to the Panarii temple or am I just the last one to catch on? The portal in the far left corner of the building?

    Hmmmm...I gotta look into that.....

I noticed a few odd building like sme strange shop and a place with two dead halflings around the place....must have a look tonite!

I hav'nt joined the thieves underground in Car Arcanum yet....are there a lot more side quests avaialble in Car Arcanum?

It seems I'm not the only one who overlooked it! That makes me feel better.

Yeah, there was a couple decent additions to the map, wasn't there? I do wish that Chris had made better Panarii hideouts and Master's Portal though. Make them someplace you'd want to stay in for more than 5 minutes. Oh, well. Guess you can't have everything.

And to answer your question about Thieves' Quests: Oh, yeah! Just about 30 more if memory serves. Of course, finding the local fences isn't always as easy as it was for Brenda in Shrouded Hills, but that just adds to the "treasure hunt" feel of the game. And just to keep things from becoming too predictable, not all towns have a fence...

I know loads of people wanted a Piaraet Quest...why not do something like:

    - Strange NPC locked in a prison somewhere.
    - He promises to take you some place special if you set him free.
    - If you do so, he tells you meet him anytime in say Dernholm docks).
    - Go there and talk to him he asks if you are ready to go.
    - Say yes and you end up in Pirate Island (which won't show up on the world map hehehe)!

    Pirate Island:
    ---------------
Famous Pirates everywhere: Redbeard, Bluebeard, Blackbeard, Guybrush Threepwood, Jack Sparrow, Long John Silver, Davey Jones, etc....

Pick up an NPC or two...some of the pirates have small monkeys as pets.

Sounds good to me - especially if you can get Jack Sparrow right. He's just crazy enough to appeal to me.

BTW - Edward Teach is the real name of Blackbeard. Sometimes you'll see it as Thatch but Teach is the accepted name. And he's in Ashbury!

One question though, if the island won't show up on the map, what if you find a need to return? For example: the merchant(s) there will not hesitate to buy stolen items.

Well the basic ideas is that the Pirate you save be available at Dernholm indefinately:

"Hey matey...want to hit the island again aye?"

    Yes.
    No.

    Pretty Sumple huh? LOL :)

I was also thinking you could have some real sumcbag bars...factions...old fashioned whore houses...

The only restriction I would make is that the weapons available for sale (and carried by the locals) would be restricted to: Hand Crafted Flintlocks, Fancy Pistols, Ols fashioned Rifles, Sabres, Rapiers, and Daggers.

Yeah.... That would work. Work rather nicely in fact.

You seem to be on the right track and heading in the right direction. I'd say go with it.

Of course, this is coming from someone who needed a full MONTH to make one small change to a DAT. :/
