charles didn't post in this thread... yet. you, scaradouche, are starting to sound more and more like him. quit trying to justify the muslim culture. i'm sure that islam, in it's purest form, is completely non-violent, but the people who are suicide bombing buses and performing honor killings on their disobedient women cannot be considered "non-violent." it's all fine and dandy to say western culture is violent, because it is, but you should hold up a more peacable people as a counterpoint.

When you say Western culture is flawed, it's simple logic to assume that you mean some other culture is not. But what culture on this Earth is truly nonviolent? Idealistically, all people revere peace, and I believe that most people want peace, but that still doesn't mean that war and violence isn't pervasive into every facet of life. And that goes for every culture, not just the West.

 

I'd go for tibetan buddhists... or maybe the bush people of africa... there's also a notable tribe of natives in southeast asia somewhere, I forget where...

i was going to mention the Amish, but since an Amish man was convicted of murdering his wife in the presence of their children in 1993 (without exposure to video games or tv, i might add), that's out.

 

Well, most tribes anywhere in africa has been in some sort of tribal war or at least fought with other tribes at some point...

 

I'ld go beyond that Vyenna, most tribes in Africa are currently fighting tribal wars. Some may, in general, be more pacifistic than others, but all wage war.

One isolated murder would not be enough for me to say that the Amish are violent people. The fact that I've heard rumors, albeit unfounded, that women in Amish households are routinely and SEVERELY sexually and physically abused by their male relatives, that makes me less convinced of their benign nature. While there is no proof to these, the number of reports is high, and all of them speak of how, as discipline for misbehavior, fathers and older brothers rape the daughters. The community covers these atrocities up as part of their culture.

The buddhists in Tibet might be an exception, except that they two live surrounded by violence. Violence is pervasive. They try to remove themselves from it, and yet they see it daily. Tibet's status is almost like the Vatican's, they're a deeply religious country focused mostly on peace. However, that doesn't mean they don't live with the effects of violence daily.

 

my point wasn't so much that the Amish are violent because of one murder, but that you can't hold up any one group of people as being completely free of violence.

Also the tribe I was talking about in southeast asia(I think it was indonesia) is the worlds most gender equal society, and have only one thing they consider a crime, incest, because they fear inbreeding in their already rather small population.
