Thanks, Milo.... But I have gone too far already to turn back now. It may still be awhile, however, before I can really post my website. We r moving and then maybe I can get DSL. Hey, I'm only 13..... Gosh, sometimes it feels like you people r the same age as me, while u r probably all in ur 20s and 30s

Anyway, Dark Underlord, I have decided NOT to use flash after all... I made a fairly nice menu using Dreamweaver, Paint Shop Pro, and Paint.
Anyway, I want to know, I made a [small] movie for my website and I want to know if you think I should have it on.... it is kind of big, however.... over 4 megs. I would have it on the index page..... I want to know if you think I should keep it or just have a still image.

Regarding the Message Board stuff, if someone would be generous enough to send me the code for a message board similar to this one (maybe even this one), I could play around with it and tweak the code until it did what I want it to do. I just CANT find a good tutorial or anything, so I will do what I usually do: tweak with code. Anyway, dont worry, I will change enough to keep the message board from violating any copyrights, but I need some code to transform! Please, anyone, e-mail me the code! Thank you.

Also, I tried Arcanun, because I want some files so I can tweak them to learn a little more about mod-making and also, I want to use some if it on my website. However, whenever I tell it to export a file, it says "Error, cannot find zlib.dll" so, if anyone who has it could send me zlib.dll by e-mail, I would greatly appreciate it.

Don't worry. You're not the only young person on this board. I'm 13 too.

4 megs is way too big of a file to force people to download. Think of the 56k'ers out there. Even people with a cable modem probably wouldn't appreciate it. I say stick with a still image. Avoid MIDI and those dumb looking cursors too.

Go here: http://www.phpbb.com/ You won't have to worry about violating any copyrights or anything. The software is open source and completely free to use. There's also a fairly active hack community, so some of the changes you want made to the board have probably already been done before.

    No problem, nbrosz.

BTW - Speaking of large file sizes, your sig is HUGE, nbrosz. Optimize that thing! It's like half a meg! It doesn't bother me becauese I'm on cable, but the 56k'ers must be dying.

Yes, I AM dying. BTW.... that thing you told me about... PHPBB.... I downloaded the 1.0.1 version and set it up to config.php so it will install it, but, gears and gadgets, my computer wont show the .php stuff in internet explorer! what do I do? I have to be able to see it if I am going to make anything... and to install it as well. How do I get my browser to support PHP?

Also, yes, I am going to fix my big signature.... lol, I didnt realize how big it was until I tried it on here =-) It's all that fading and fancy framework.... I will forget the fancyness and just have it jump from frame to frame.... that would only make 5 frames. Much easier.

First off, get phpBB version 2. That's the newest one; the one that this forum is using.

Second, I'm not sure what you mean about your browser not supporting php. PHP scripting takes place server-side and outputs HTML to your browser. You'll need to either (a)set up an account with a webhost that can give you php support and at least one MySQL database, or (b)set up all that on your local machine. All the stuff that you need to do (b)is available for free (php, MySQL, and Apache Webserver), but getting it configured and running could be tricky.

    This signature better?

Anyway, I meant version 2.0.1 on the PHPbb version I downloaded... sorry if I mislead you. But I still want to know how to make php work on my browser.... If you can help me with that, I should be pretty ok after that, I think... I hope.....

Anyway, I am putting something sorta "new" on my waiting website at http://www.vendigroth.50g.com. If you want, you can make up and post stories that could be used in the storyline on Arcanum 2. Write it from the view of the traveler on the journey. When I post my real website, I will post all the finished stories.... so start your story with [begin] at the top and finish with [end] at the bottom so I know when and where your story ends. Ok?

Well, I mean that when I hooked a link up to config.php on my computer, it wants to download it.... I cant get it to run it on the browser... I said run from location, but it doesnt do anything.

Also, I need even more help! My stupid host (50g) only lets me upload files less then 590 kb! That is crazy! My website will have music, plus there is some pretty big stuff I will need to upload. That is ridiculous! Does anyone know of a FREE web host that allows unlimited bandwidth (or at least a very high one), at least 30 megs, FTP access, possibly no ads (or if so, banner ads), it doesnt matter the size of the file u upload, it is compatible with PHPbb (and MySQL), and is easy and powerful to use?

Maybe I could join the group that terra-arcanum is hosted on.... does anyone think this would be a good idea? Is it free? If so, then where can I do it?

Your sig pic is fine now.
Ok, first things first. Php doesn't run in a browser. It's run on the server through a php interpreter. When the server is done interpreting the code, it sends out regular HTML to your browser. That's why you're able to see these forums in your browser; All the php is taken care of by the server that's hosting the forum.

In order to run the config.php file, you'll first need to open it in a text editor like Notepad and put in your server info (it's location, the location of your database, your mail stuff, etc). Then you need to upload all this stuff to your webspace, graphic files in binary, all the other stuff in ASCII. Then you run the install.php through your browser. Well, roughly... That's the basic gist of it. I haven't done this since before phpBB went to version 2, so the install may be a little different.

The only way to install this message board software locally (on your home computer) is to set it up as a server, install a php interpreter, and a MySQL database. Personally, I don't see a reason to go this route. It can be a pain in the ass setting up all that stuff, especially if you're not sure of what you're doing. It's far easier to just upload it to some webspace, mess around with it until you're satisfied, and then go live.

Dude, no. Are at least very, very unlikely. And if you do somehow manage to find a host that will give you all of this for free, don't expect it to be around for long. Bandwidth costs money. For all that stuff, you'll have to spend some cash. For the amount of traffic that you'll generate, at least at first, you can find some reasonably priced hosts. Check out www.webhostingtalk.com for some of these.

Oh and whatever you do, don't put those goddamn auto-loading MIDI files on your webpage. Me and 99% of all people can't stand that shit.

Maybe you could... I guess it wouldn't hurt to try it. I don't think you should get your hopes up, though. I can't see them wanting to take on another Arcanum site when they're already have a well established one, ie this one.

Ah, thanks for the help, but, hey, they may accept a website regestered under Arcanum 2. This web site must just be arcanum, right? Anyway, thanks for the help... and the music is just the .mp3 files from Arcanum converted to .wav.... they will auto-play, though.

I'd bet you anything that if an Arcanum 2 were to come out then this site would be covering it. But who knows? It wouldn't hurt to ask.

    DON'T DO IT!

Alot of people listen to mp3s while they browse. It fucking sucks to load a site and have your music interrupted by some blaring .wav file. It's something that makes me avoid sites.

At least have a little radio panel were people can turn it on if they want to hear it. Don't make it load automatically.

How true that is. They say ignorance is bliss, and while it has many possible interpretations and applications, it really is. This crappy computer I'm on only has a 32-bit sound card, so the speakers can only play one thing at a time. Which means that anything like sound on a website doesn't interrupt me, but it does hurt my bandwidth (56k can really suck sometimes...what am I saying? It almost always sucks! About the only good thing is the reliability).

Well, I have nearly finished it. I only need to finish the message board and add a few links and a little info and it's done. Also, I made a friendly little music menu, just below the main menu. It should do.
