Both definitely have their uses in the game; but I use lock picking more. It saves alotta boot leather not having to search for every key. Also, for the quest to clear the dwarf/mage I picked the lock on the Urn for the last piece of evidence which clears him of the murder.

    Advantages for pickpocketing:
    1. You do not have to wait until nightfall to raid shopkeepers inventory.
    2. Without pickpocketing, some quests you would be forced to kill the NPC.
    3. You can often pickpocket armor, weapons, jewelry, etc., right off an enemy before the fight starts.
    4. You can sell a highdollar item to an NPC, pickpocket it, and repeat until the NPC runs out of money.

For my style of play? I always get lockpick skill; but end up advancing the clock quite a bit while raiding shops.

    Jarinor, where are you?!
Lycander, please don't take this the wrong way, but have you actually played the game?
Yes, you can have both skills. If you have enough Character Points to spend, you can have every skill there is. The whole thing about this game is directing the limited CP's available so that you end up with the character you want. It's open-ended.
Lockpicking and Pickpocketing are both dependant on DEX, so boost that statistic.
If you wanted to, you could master those skills, and then become a Master of Backstabbing as well, because it's also dependant on DEX. Or maybe you want to invest a few CP's in Nose skill and cover all the Picking arts. It's up to you.
Play the game, make some mistakes, and learn from them. The point is to enjoy it!

It's really hard to get a gunslinger to a level at which he won't be just boxing bag with shaky hand and rusty pistol Here's what you need to do, or more precisely what I did, to get a strong Gunsmithy/Electricity techie.

    1. Use your first 5CPs really well, put two at most into Gunsmithy, don't put anything into any other discipline. Put two points in Firearms and the last one in Dodge.

    2. You must be Firearms expert before leaving Shrouded Hills, also it would be good if you got Haggle and Persuasion apprentice.

    3. You MUST put your points in Charisma and Persuasion (to Expert level) in the early part of the game so that you'll be able to have 3 followers. In my case they were: Sogg, Virgil (replaced with Magnus as soon as I got to Tarant) and herbalist from Ashbury (Ms. Styles perhaps). I didn't get the dog so you might need only two if you get him (but he can't carry anything).

    4. Now when your followers can protect you develop Gunsmithy to a level which allows you to make Long Range Rifle.

    5. Instead of spending a CP into explosives buy a technical manual and make your own bullets.

    6. Develop Electricity. Charged rings are great (you can wear two of them at once) and take Magnus' gauntlets from him (they add DX and ST). Also you can sell charged staff for 1000gp.

    7. While doing this develop also Dexterity so that you can fire some 3 times/turn.

    8. Now it's easy and up to you. Finish up Electricity tree so and Gunsmithy if you like so that you'll be able to make a Tesla Gun - really good for automatons.

I had no significant background. It's good to develop DX to 20 (25 action points) and become Dodge master.

not if youre a thief. steal your way to glory. my gun thief at the end of the game has 200 000gold. sure ive wiped out alot of the population but who needs them.
if you have to much trouble get the dog on your side.

You can make them yourself fortunately which lowers the cost a lot. Besides finding ingredients general stores have two sets (charcoal&saltpepper) every day and you can assemble one or two more sets from other shops.

And my point was that it's only true up till a certain point in the game, which is getting to Tarant.

Not the herbalist healern in Dernholm, at least it sounds like you say you got all your followers (except Magnus) before getting to Tarant.

Of course the healer girl is in Dernholm, don't know why I wrote Ashbury, perhaps because I was thinking about the dog already while writing this. Anyway thanks for correcting me.

blessings happen when you go to the altars. so its all the way through. there not put on hold or anything like that. how would you put a god on hold anyway.

just do it all and see how it works. if you fuck up cheat or start again. theres no perfect anything anyway. you want to use guns then theres only 2 things you really need. pe and firearms.

I've got a character with full ranks in MECHANICS,SMITHY and Professor degree in GUNSMITHY,HERBAL and 3 ranks in ELECTRICITY.I'm also an expert in Firearms.I'm currently lvl 40 and i'm still in Caladon searching for the 'Horror Among the Dark Elves'.I'm having 3 automatons with me now,so it is possible to be a gunslinger along with automatons following you around.

Ya know, those automations are deadly, but they rob you of experience.
