The improvements have recently been rebalanced, when they noticed that everyone got a harbour first thing, they uped the price. Also improvements now have daily upkeep, my harbour now costs me $600 a day.

You can buy 1 improvement per 1000 citizens. You'll be wanting a harbour first and then either 5 banks in a row or 5 factories in a row.

War is the most expensive aspect, I've doubled my expenses due to this bloody war. And you really don't gain that much from it anyway, I've made maybe $1000 out of the whole thing. Being an economic power is definitely preferable to being a military one.

Until you've got considerable resources and infrastructure, it's best to remain peaceful in the game. That way, you can accrue your needed money in private.
I made the mistake of not picking "War is not an option" when I started, and I was immediately roped into two conflicts with people in my range, the first attacker having 20 strength, the second having 100. Both backed off after I got aid from the NAAC, and they threatened them with "If you don't back off, four of us in the same range will dogpile you". All that jazz.
I'm anxious to get out of anarchy so I can rake in the money again.
My trick is, to avoid slowly dropping approval rates, raise the tax rate to 28%, then collect taxes, and drop the tax rate again. This way, the citizens won't steadily grow more pissed off.
Any way...all that I've learned since starting this past April is really helping me to go up the ranks. What's funny is I can remember when Cyber Nations only had 3,000 players.

Don't stay in peace mode to long, you get penalised.

The higher your happiness, the more your people earn, the more they earn, the more taxes they pay.

    EDIT

The highest I ever had was 28

28, geez. Does it stay with your population "being in love with you" at that level?

You get love at around 17 or 18 and after that you don't get any other reactions from your citizens. I'm down 6 happiness at the moment, I got an event that decreases my happiness by 3 for a month and I lost my wine trade.

Oh that is harsh. Is that because of the current war you are partaking in? If you can, can you send me a link so I can watch your progress?

    War with Spidatania

Its not much of a contest, hes in Anarchy, its just a matter of the GC pulling him to pieces now. If he'd accepted our diplomatic offers it never would have come to this.

You can capture infrastructure, land and money in battle, you also get money looted from destroyed equipment. However you don't get much and once your enemy is in anarchy you can't capture any more. Once they are in anarchy you can send in 1 raiding party per day which destroys infra and tech, but doesn't capture it.

Cruise Missiles destroy infra and tanks.

Nukes destroy infra and wipe a nations soldier count back to 0.

Well at least you cannot be completely defeated in the game allowing you to re-build your nation.

You can actually, infrastructure goes up in upkeep costs as your nation ages. So if an older nation is reduced to Zero Infrastructure (ZI) they will have had their income reduced to a few thousand a day, once they start buying infra again they will find that the upkeep cost is actually greater than their income. You have placed them into an endless cycle of debt.
