dealing with nations like you said would be good. instead of just the one scale of pleased and angry with you. they could have added say. shit scared of you and will do anything you say scale.

the fact that a unit looks like archers dosent really mean it is. its the numbers you have to look at. those are cosmetics. but still. a spearman defeating a tank or mech infantry. dose seem a little wrong dosent it.

i'm not 100% certain of this, but i think the scared reaction is in there in the diplomacy. naturally, the diplomats put a brave face on things, so you won't actually see anyone say "we're scared of you" but i think power comparisons are factored into diplomacy.

if you're relatively weak, you'll become someones bitch. they'll make demands and declare war if you refuse.

if you're strength is comparable to others, they will deal with you in the most logical way (depending on other factors of course)

if you're very powerful, they'll do things that scared folk do: they'll probably go in for a lot of loud posturing, while acceding to some of your demands and secretly making alliances with the rest of the world behind your back.

milo, i can't stand the thought of you not enjoying this game that i strongly recommended to you. if you're around in irc later, i'll try to give you a few pointers.

here's a few broad ones that may help:
    • Science: concentrate on science early in the game. your domestic advisor has a couple of bars allowing you to control the science/entertainment/money ratio. put entertainment to zero while your cities are still very small (below size 8 or so) and your science to as high as it will go without giving you a neative income.
    • Expand produce settlers fairly early to settle new cities. Each one produced reduces your city size by 2, so it's worth aiming for the first one when your starting city gets to size 4. Once you have a few cities on the go, get some of them settling too. Settle 10-15 cities early, trying to put them in good locations. Also, build workers to put roads and irrigation on the key squares (ones with good resources) around your cities and build roads connecting your cities.
    • Location: cities have big benefits of built on rivers, although flood plains can cause disease. Also, a good balance between food and shields (production) resources is best for a city location. Do some reading on what effects terrains have, and try to settle somewhere with some good food squares (plains/grasslands) and some good production squares (mountains/hills). Bonus resources (cattle, wheat, fish, game, etc) make a big difference to a city's growth early on in its life.
    • Defense: ensure you have a t least one unit in each city. Otherwise people can just waltz in and take your stuff. Having more units is better, but there are also other important things to build.
    • Wonders try to get a couple of decent sized cities with reasonable shields production building some wonders early on. If those cities are on rivers, so much the better, because their size will be able to exceed 6 without an aqueduct. I believe the most important ancient wonder is the pyramids, for which you'll need to research masonry before you can build it. Most wonders are pretty damn good, though, so building them all would be fantastic (and not likely!). Note, that some wonders can only be built by coastal cities.

I hope some of this helps. I'll chat to you about other stuff later.

    Don't bother

CIV III is a let down. It is extremely difficult to the point of being a pain in the neck -my games ended before I even got tanks because of a lack of "strategic resources". There are fewer governments as well (no fundamentalism). Even on easy level, the computer cheats and starts monopolizing the whole board making expansion almost impossible.

Try Call to Power II -MUCH better game.
