    You've changed the argument, then, from being egocentric, to being desire-driven. egocentric carries a lot more implication, since I can have a genuine desire to help people. If you want to unilaterally assume my intentions you can do so, and go on to assume you're right, but the selfishness of a great many people doesn't not preclude selflessness on the part of other people, and just because people act in self-serving ways at sometimes doesn't not mean they do so all the time.

    A desire is a want, and a want is often, but not always selfish. There are, however, cases where it isn't. I don't know what you define altruism AS, but to be completely free of any desires is something closer to Enlightenment, and to be completely without ulterior motives is closer to what Confucious would call sage-like. It's just to what end those ulterior motives are bent that is the question with most people's behavior.
