    Did you have a different version of DirectX installed the last time you played it? Try reinstalling the latest DirectX and see if that helps. You might also check your Task Manager to make sure you don't have any resource-stealing apps secretly running and bogging down your system. That's been a prime suspect of mine before when I have trouble running other games. In that case, you might just want to do what Philes said and reformat your computer. Just remember to reinstall your latest drivers afterwards or the problem come back.

    Ok, it was the anti-aliasing. I switched it off in the ATI Catalyst Control Centre and it has fixed the problem. Thanks a1021 for the solution and thanks everyone else for the replies.
