That depends on the individual item. All magic items have a "power" rating associated with it, the higher the rating, the higher the PC's MA...
I really found it fun playing a half-orc with an arsonist background. The racial prejudice towards the half-orcs enriched the role playing...
I seem to remember Teech Bate's ship captain and Franklin describing at least some locations that did not seem to be part of the Arcanum continent...
