I start the NaNoWriMo in 12 hours time. A whole month of frenetic writing... depending on how long it takes me to hit the 50,000 words, anyways. So I'm not gonna be round much for a few weeks.

So, to emulate my presence for the time being, I leave the following not-so-pithy insults and hate.

    * Fuck you all.
    * Fuck you newbie, learn to spell and read the mother-fucking FAQ.
    * Gravedig one more time and I swear I'll find a way to kill you with my mind!
    * Touch me there again and die.
    * Holy FUCK, where do you keep getting those links? MY EYES! THE GOGGLES VAPOURISED!

    Ahem. See ya.

Best of luck, but tell me, is alchemy more magical than technological? Is there any technology in there at all?

Probably a bit of chemistry combined with magickal potions and stuff.

Like if alchemy was in Arcanum, would it be technological or magical?

I'm a fictional theorist, and it just gets messed up in the head when one thinks of how potions are actually magical when technology is the development of nature.

So what witches do, mix loads of things in a cauldron, well that is technology isn't it (like herbology)? Well, it would be, bar the chanting and spell casting that's going on.

But does the chanting and spell casting swing it all to be magical?

    >_>

Just remember Xiao, that if you ever reach that 50,000 word mark you will have to link to it or post it at the forum.

Crafting a magickal sword would work in much the same way really. Even if you use medieval techniques smithing the sword itself, without using any fancy metallurgical advances, it would still be a somewhat technological item. To be frank about it, nearly every piece of equipment in the game down to a wizard's robe can only be manufactured relying on the appliance of natural law somehow.
What separates "technological" from "neutral" in Arcanum is a somewhat diffuse level of technological complexity. A common longsword isn't considered technological (and can be enchanted) while a balanced sword is somewhat high-tech and resists magickal improvement. Going by the same logic, you don't need any particular scientific schooling to make some strawberry juice and hence it can be enchanted to a health potion, whereas a healing salve is too complex.

Deep down, none of this makes any objective sense; that's where suspension of disbelief kicks in.

Actually, in my world Alchemy is Magic as a Science. Think of all the old Alchemists trying to turn lead into gold... now imagine that in a world where the correct application of magic could potentially make it work.

One part science, two parts magic.

Yes, a sword and a bow etc would be technological, but what keeps me satisfied is that they could be classified as negligibly technological. An example then of negligible magic would be thinking I guess (I suppose thinking is the twisting of nature by will, is it not?).

But with witches brewing potions, they require specific ingredients, and not just a liquid to hold the magic from their chants. They require tooth of lion, tail of dog, or whatever. Is it because these items hold magic themselves or something? Otherwise, it looks like technology is in there to me....

Well if alchemy is "the science of magic", then it would be 100% science would it not? Just as chemistry is fully science, just a different section of it than biology.

Also, I found this (while searching for an imagine with the caption: "Alchemy: The Science of Magic" which I saw before):

Could have been good for Dark Fool's avatar. It even says "Dark Fool" on it.

Would it be a satisfactory explanation that potions work because the witches brewing them believe they work, ie a concoction made from the penis of a newt, bear sinews, bird spit and fish breath would be quite useless (and taste like shit) unless there was magick involved? It's not the ingredients per se, but the ritual they form that matters.

More like the collective beliefs of magick practicers shape their collective reality. So therefore as long as they believe frogs have magickal properties and beans do not, reality will reflect this.

This allows speculations about the effects of local, but strong beliefs, and the effects of experimenting with, and enforcing Natural Law.

Ahh yes, I get what you are conveying, and it is quite satisfactory.

However, putting witches to the side for the moment, for the more knowledgeable people, regarding potions, is just any fluid required at all, as long as it is enchanted?

Best of luck and skill to you.

Other will be more than willing to take up this flag.

In the same vane as others have spoken, I'd think it would probably be worth it.
Also, sleeping at the foot of the bed, I hear you mumble this from time to time as you sleep.

Has the entire male population of HoL turned into a bunch of black widow males? Like, getting your head ripped off by a blunt chainsaw, dying with the flag at the top of the pole?

    *enters touching queue*

    o_O

Holy crap, I never expected so many of you to be so willing to die. That's... actually really, really scary.

Addendum: Today was a really, really bad writing day. I am this close from writing today's drivel off and claiming one of my 5 'no-write' days for the month. Same thing happened last year. *sigh*

Not just willing to die, but to die in an appropriate and glorious manner.
Sorta like my Nephew. He wants to die in a manner which will cause hundreds, if not thousands, of people to say "What the fuck!!"

X: "Where'd the body fragments come from?"
Y: "Oh, that was just someone who touched Xiao inapropriatly"
X: "Wow!. Lucky guy! or girl? Can't tell from the fragments."

There's a saying: when you were born, you were crying and everyone around you was smiling. Live your life so that when you die, you're the one who is smiling and everyone around you is crying.

I'm going to achieve that by adhering to the beginning of my current signature (though "screaming in pain and agony" might be more appropriate than crying in that case).
