Are people honestly still contesting whether video games are art or not? That should have been settled 15 years ago, if not sooner. But what else to expect in a world of ignorami galore?

Rather than argue the point, I think that a simple TLDR will suffice.

If everything is subjective, subjectiveness cannot be defined and is therefore meaningsless.

I mostly looked at the pretty pictures myself.

I'm not saying everything is subjective, though it very well may be. If that's the case, then all definitions of reality are meaningless. I just think it's best to be like water, which does not contend with time.

I don't understand the point you were trying to make here, Frigo. All the screenshots you posted paled in comparison to the paintings and sculptures they were compared to, and you added in dialogue from the games that not only tarnished the screenshots but were also literature, and not the video game itself.

This entire debate is stupid, by the way. If people don't want to believe video games are art, that's fine. Part of artistry is in knowing your audience, and it's not Roger Ebert.

Like so many things that are stupid in this world, all it takes is another 20 years or so for the old morons "in power," so to speak, to die off or become irrelevant. Then those in charge will be the generation that didn't know life before the internet, grew up playing video games, and understands how and why these things need to be defined, controlled, handled by children, and governed.

Of course, at that point, we'll all be complaining about how connecting to the neuro-net via our datajacks is heresy and those younger than us will have the same problem.

In its absolute ideal, art is the flawless, efficient communication of a mental musing or thought. It is hardly subjective, my good man.

This is true Philes, although perhaps to a lesser degree than you stated. At least, one hopes it wouldn't reach the full potential reflected in your supposition.

Muro: My grandmother could have done the bottom picture in photoshop. Badass does not equal artistic.

I disagree with your comment Grakelin. I do not believe your grandmother could indeed make that in photoshop.

Then, tell me what grounds frigo has, a mere opinionated man, in judging videogames outside of art. By calling art subjective, I was allowing his transgression to live in its own reality.

Actually, my grandmother has been using photoshop for a number of years now.

No one ever thought my grandmother would get into Facebook either.

Videogames in themselves are not art. But the artwork in videogames is most certainly art.

When one's grandmother is a badass Photoshop guru, it's a bit unfair to use her in such a discussion.

Is literature art? Is music art? Is any conscious effort to point to the transcendent art? If yes, you have no rational grounds for excluding games.
