Yes, a wonderful idea indeed. One I've been having since, well, since i played Arcanum for the first time. Now, since I'm starting with 3D modeling , I asked myself, what should i model? Will it be a nice and sparkly Lamborghini? Or maybe more usual and useful stuff like furniture or computer monitor? Nooo, I had to start brewing an idea of making a Vendigroth in 3D. Stupid and awesome at the same time. So it began... I'm not promising anything, as a matter of fact this will probably get trashed since I've got short attention span for these kind of stuff, but still, some here are my first steps: http://i.imgur.com/rJyqG.jpg http://i.imgur.com/cwC3C.jpg http://i.imgur.com/14e9z.jpg - no wonder they didn't return, salt can be hazardous if this kind of machinery is exposed and unprotected in open waters. http://i.imgur.com/tuGg3.jpg It's slightly modified and not even close to finishing. Needs more rivets and more gadgets that make no particular job done, because that's what steampunk is all about. http://i.imgur.com/on99f.jpg - this is based on that image in the end sequence where Arronax raised the city. It's one of those buildings blurred in the background of that image. Also, needs a shitload of work. http://i.imgur.com/IVQDX.jpg - and this one is intended to be some kind of a generator that collects energy from air (I think Tesla had some ideas around this concept) based on the look of the tower of an 'techie looking castle' in Void. I'd be glad if someone had any suggestions and ideas since the sources for the looks of buildings and whole city are limited to few low-res images that appear in game. And are mostly buried in a desert.
I see some real potential here. Keep going if you can. One source for free textures and/or items is Renderocity.com. Check there - even something like a bryce scene could have useful materials.
It's really nice, but please keep it low-poly (< 10 000 polys), so it can actually be used in "some" game. Btw, I also made a few 3D models, most notably - Automaton, Tesla Staff, Elephant Gun, and Medieval Sword. (And also a few models of new units for C&C - Tiberium Wars.) None of them can be used for real-time rendering in game, too many polys - so it was waste of time. Anyway, good luck!
I say! Not bad at all! I'm not an expert on the technique, like Crypton and Rroyo, but it looks great!
You know, you can reduce the polycount of models for use ingame, and transfer the fine detail to bumpmaps. It's a common practice when creating models for games.
Just bump/normal mapping all those rivets alone on the meshes would probably help immensely, and save an ass ton of time.
Nice, makes me wish I still had access to a 3d modelling tool so i could make that Tarrant steam train I always wanted
