About What I read at the terra-arcanum front page, The review to me seems very how should I say? On mark. Since the cariety of the graphics is really low, Having games like Max Payne or Future Silent Hill, Arcanum is Backwash. It was not inteded to make anyone say good things about grachics or animation.
The storyline and rpg is what they based their efforts on. They seemed to forget about the stability of the game though.
I guess anyone can complain. Hey I think than neither Max Payne nor Arcanum is really woth 50 dollars. It is alot of money for someone who has schooling and working part time. Max? It's 10 hours of fun. And Arcanum is too buggy.Troika should get credit for making such a product, but they should get spanked aswell. For people that have high end machines that run in 1600 and 32 bit color like a dream this game is mostly crappy. But arcanum will run on a low end system allowing all who have less powerful machines to have fun aswell since nowdays most things are 3d and require a monster card to run properly over 30 frames.
I had fun did everyone else? The game is good but not that good...
If anyone has a different view post away...

For someone like me who's sick and tired of games with great graphics and miserable gameplay, Arcanum is a dream come true! It runs smoother than any other game on my older computer, it's got practically endless replayability, it's highly customizable; imagine what it'd have been like if Black Isle (Fallout, Fallout 2) had made it!

 

yes that is all true. But with low end computers you will not be able to enyoy great graphics since they will not be there.
that's the whole idea. Since fallout 3 is 3d, people that enyoyed arcanum on their celerons and deforcemx will be able to kiss interplays or blackisles asses.

 

if it would be made by blackisle i think it wouldt be as great.. or why would troika split from it?.. they also make a reference to it.

when u ask about isle of despair from townspeople they say "The Black Isle?" and then somethin else

And cos' i don wanna be known as spammer i'll give you some opinion. Arcanum is a great game which runs surprisingly well on my low end budget computer. I'm not interested in Fallout 3 yet cos' i haven't finished Arcanum. And one more thing, there's a guy (or girl) who called himself 'forgetitbar'. Does that read 'forget it bar' or 'forge TIT bar'?

course not... they quit besides there would be a black isle logo all over the place. those guys never forget that part of the game

All the people complaining about how slow/buggy the game runs should maybe sell their computer and start playing chess or something like that. Or alternatively should learn how their OS works and keep a clean pagefile in one block among other things. It runs fine on my pIII600/Matrox G400. Only bug sofar (1.0.7.0) is the 'tempus fugit' spell sticking and that's all. Some minor logic loops as well but that can't be helped on a game this complex. No show stoppers though. I once coded a very simple dungeoncrawler for fun and had no idea what I started. The mechanism for keeping track of all that had happened alone was a nightmare. A world as big and busy as arcanum still running smoothly on my comp is a work of art.

It annoys the hell out of me that all the review sites complain about the graphics. The graphics engine maybe a little long in the tooth but the graphics (notice the difference between 'graphics engine' and 'graphics') are great. Anyone notice the subway booth, houses and woodwork in qintarra, castles in tarant and caldona, ironwork on bridges,dragon exhibit,crashed sub on isle of despair etc. etc.
The land changes nicely as you travel, every city got it's own streetlights and whatnot.
I suspect that the people complaining have been blunted by the disco inferno of unreal and planescape torment.The muted style has probably been a design decision and fits nicely with the 19th century style. The artists have done a tremendous job and if you don't like it then you'll have to wait for the garish polygons of morrowind (which I nonetheless will buy the day it's available).

As for the engine and special effects; a snazzy engine would have been alot of work that has now been spent on storyline and gameplay. And that's rare these days.

In short, they made the game they wanted to make for a select group of people. Select indeed seeing how moronic the majority of the reviews and comments are.

Yes, I totally agree with you wump. And Jinxed, I bought the game for 450baht which is less than $10 US. Cheap eh? Got Thai manual (what a weenie) with table of contents (does other manuals have this?) and the game itself is english. Damn I'm lucky. :grin:

 

maybe the game is good artisticly. Ok fine.

You spemd 50 bucks on a game that still requires your expertise in a completly different field even to work? That is complete bullshit. It is the developers mistake to do that. It is mostly like that with all pc games they just go oh what the hell let's realese it anyway. And what? I bought a game that gets installed and everythings fine untill I run it 'cause all I see is my beutiful desktop after 1 sec. Now that is major shit. These developers have no dignity no sense of self criticism. They think people are gonna buy this crap nonetheless and mostly thats the case. What the hell, lets realese a path later fuck it!
