I am looking into purchasing a new computer. I would appreciate some input into some good ones. What I don't want is some proprietary POS that I can't upgrade or has the "integrated" graphics/sound (ie. Compaq, Gateway, HP, Dell, etc.). Money is not a huge stumbling block, but I don't want it to break the bank.

    Any suggestions?

Look around for the "Computer Advice" thread - I asked a similar question and got lots of feedback.

    E 10000
    [IMG]
The E 10000 is designed to provide flexible computational power using from between 1 and 36 processors as needed configurable on the fly. In addition to its processor power it has 36 gigabytes of memory and 3 Terabytes of disk storage to provide the optimal computing environment for genomic research. In future the E 10000 will be able to expand to 64 processors, 64 gigabytes of ram and 60 terabytes of online disk storage.

    See! It's even upgradeable!

Anyone seen the PCPP Beast (Aus/NZ) recently? Who needs 2 Gig of RAM, apart from those who want to run 6 or 7 copies of Warcraft III (shudders)?

How comfortable are you with building your own computer and troubleshooting problems yourself, Vlad?

Building it, no problem. Troubleshooting, not to comfortable. I really don't know that much about computer troubleshooting, plus I have a bad habit of breaking electrical shit when it doesn't work like I think it should.

I have tossed around the idea of building my own. Do you know a good place to buy the components?

Dude, get a Dell. I did. Sheriff Fatman got his components from them if I'm not sadly mistaken. ¹

Yes, absolutely. I use Newegg.com for all my computer parts. They have very good prices, usually among the lowest. Excellent service and return policies, and they don't try to screw you over the shipping. And since you're in Penn, you won't have to pay any taxes (Newegg is in Cali).

The computer I'm posting from right now was put together with parts (largely) from Newegg. For just about $1,000 I got:
    -Pentium 4 1.8ghz (@2.4ghz)
    -512mb PC3200 DDR Ram
    -GeForce 4 ti4400 w/128mb RAM
    -80gig hard drive w/8mb cache

Those are the basics, but the whole thing consists of high-quality parts down to the the case and power supply. Check the "Calis Does The Upgrade Thing" thread for all the details. I'll come back and link it in a little bit.

Given that I put this together a few months ago, and given that the PC market is slumping right now and lowering prices because the back-to-school sales bump never materialized, you can probably get all for less than I did.

EDIT - retard is mistaken, sadly. Sheriff Fatman put together his own computer. You can't buy Dell parts, you either buy a complete system from them or you don't.

I know that I am probably going to bring up all sorts of shit that has been hashed out long ago, BUT,

I refuse to own a Dell because they are a major supporter of Americans Against Gun Violence*

*There are very few Americans that belong to this organization. Most of the ones that do are leftovers from Handguns Control Inc. so you can imagine what kind of agenda this organization has.

    P.S. It's gun control.

Thanks Milo, I will check it out.

No, the point is that the Americans Against Gun Violence are really the Non-Americans Against Guns. They could give a shit less about actual gun violence and the people that commit it/are victims of it. They just want to ban all guns.

BTW, the founder of this "organization" is the owner/founder of Monster.com

Long live the NRA! Hey Vlad, I'm from PA also, Hollidaysburg is the town. That's about 45 minutes away from State College. How about you?

I remember someplace auctioning a computer which they knew shit all about - a Cray Supercomputer. They didn't even know how to turn it on! Going for a cheap, cheap $25000. Note: they don't provide any support whatsoever. Or a manual. Figure it out yourself :).
