I was reminded to read the LoR series by these forums, and am almost done with the Hobbit.

I was curious, how can Gandalf do such great magic against goblins, but can't kill some wolves without burning down the forest.

Also, what is with Tolkien's unhealthy obsession for smoke-rings and singing dwarves, elves, and goblins?

Hey, I just finished the Hobbit today myself. First time I've read it since just a kid. I was also inspired to read it from these forums.

Um, Gandalf didn't burn the forest down....Just set most of the wolves on fire....The reason he used fire is because wolves (or Wargs) are deathly afraid of fire, whereas the goblins are not.

Oh, and I agree with you about the songs, I would just rather them not be in the books

If you make it about Hobbit Girls, I'll owe you a drink. Be sure to include a reference to them liking breakfast and having hairy feet

BTW, looking into my crystal ovoid, I see a future filled with LoTR related user names. I'm going to amuse myself and test my knowledge, by going to MSN in a month and trying to get ([LoTRname]<99)@hotmail.com

I missed out on the Lord of the Rings series. I tried to read The Hobbit once a long time ago, but couldn't really get into it.

I just bought the series through Amazon, though. I keep hearing about what classics they are, so I owe it to myself to read them. See what I'm missing out on.

Plus, I'd like to read them before I see the movie(s). Liv Tyler with pointy ears... yummy.

Naw, thanks for the offer though, Fatman.

If LoTR fever hits me, I figure I'll just register an "ArwenIsHot" account here and argue with myself.

    So...

when are you guys going to see the movie? I'm getting to see it next week, whee! A friend o' mine got us pre-premiere tickets! The movie opens the 19th here... and we're going to see it the 15th. Spiffiness incarnate. Needless to say, the friend in question won't have to buy any of his own beer.

    Lyrics by Elrond John:
    *music*dwarven chorus*

"I see your foot fur, Middle Earth chick so sweet
Down there having breakfast and some Bilbo meat
She's a short girl, she's standing three foot three
Turning tricks for the Dwarves in the big city

    Hobbit Girl
What you wanting with the Dwarven world?
    Hobbit Girl
Frodo want you in his Hobbit world
He want to take you from the Dwarven clan
But you keep putting out for every Dwarven man

Hobbit Girl, Hobbit Girl, Hobbit Girl
Tell me what you wanting with the Dwarven world"

Calis and Feldon - you're both bastards!

Feldon, I wanted the Hobbit Girl song as a sweet thing to show Lysa. How can I show her that piece of perversity? She'd skin me!

Calis, Lysa goes home for Christmas on the 18th Dec, and I have agreed not to go see it until she returns on 29th. Damn, you SUCK for getting to see it early.

    "Little Hobbit, little one
Breakfast time is so much fun
    Do you love me?
    Do you Hobbit Girl?
    (Hobbit Girl, Hobbit Girl)

I have wondered what you were
    Brushing out your instep fur
    Do you love me?
    Do you Hobbit Girl?

    We could cruise Murkwood together
In search of old Smaug's lair
In my burrow we could pick the
    nits from our foot hair

So I say from me to you
I will make your dreams come true
    Do you love me?
    Do you Hobbit Girl?
    (Hobbit Girl, Hobbit Girl)

    Better?

Thanks, but I plagiarized Elton John and The Beach Boys on those.

You seem to do a lot of copying other peoples work . The gnome song, now those 2...what sick kind of album collection do you have at home?

Elton John and the Beach Boys are the tool of the Devil!

HAHAHAHAHAHAH, that's just beautiful, man. My favorite line: "I see your foot fur, Middle Earth chick so sweet
Down there having breakfast and some Bilbo meat"

What Elton John song is this to the tune of?

    "Island Girl".
It doesn't look like it'll fit, but if you listen to the song, it does.
And, hey, I was pressed for time, and these are written to actual tunes, so you get the phrasing and you can sing along. Plus, I'm a lazy, dirty bastard.

Ring Lord, have you explained your comments about "alternate versions" of LoTR yet? I remember you saying somthing about Sam Scrumpy or something, but never saw an explanation.

Could you put me out of my misery please?

there are two verseions of the book:
the very first one that tolkien wrote.
and another version that is the "re-write"
    version of the first one.
i read the first one and you probably the 2nd.
    now you get it?
