So, I've a $50 Amazon gift card, and have started assembling a list of older games I want to pick up. Most of them are just random adds. Since I don't know any of these games, I thought I'd get input on them, just in case they aren't worth buying (realize that they're $4-10).

    Torchlight
    Dungeon Lords
    Avencast
The Settlers: Rise of an Empire
    Dungeon Siege 3
    Dawnspire

...I'm also buying the complete collection of Daria. That's unrelated, however.

I'm hesitant to buy DS3. I've heard terrible things about it from Yuki. The rest are all possibles? Any of those worth ditching, or have I forgotten a game worth buying?

Is Settlers: Rise of an Empire your first Settlers game? I can't comment on it specifically, but I did tremendously enjoy Settlers III when I was younger so it could be a better starting point if you're curious about the series in general. Then again running a search on Amazon.com, it's not cheap.

As for the rest of the games, never touched them so I wouldn't know.

Yes, it will be my first Settlers game. I'm keeping an eye open for the older games at used book stores (where I normally buy my video games, actually).

I think, unrelated to this topic, I'm going to put together an inventory of my computer game collection. It's surprisingly small.

Yes, before we can recommend new games to you, you must first list every game you've ever played. Otherwise we risk repetition.

They all seem like poor choices really. I wouldn't really rely on Yuki's opinion on games though, she plays COD.

What would you recommend instead? Realize that I can't play First Person games, and I won't touch anything from Bethesda.

    The "Patrician" series was good.

I play COD. Or rather, I played COD. Since returning from the land of non-gaming, I've found my FPS skills aren't what they used to be. Maybe I'm just rusty and haven't found any shooters worth playing religiously enough to get my game back, or maybe my reflexes are getting past their prime. Maybe both. I think back to my teenage years playing Unreal Tournament, when I had the twitch reflexes to score headshots with ease in a fast-paced game. Don't get me wrong, I can still dominate most of the no-talent drones who play COD, but that's only marginally satisfying.

I guess if someone would put out a really inspired new FPS and I could find the time to devote to getting in the zone, two concepts that seem pretty far-fetched at this point, I could probably get back to the glory days of resting comfortably on top of the scoreboard every time. More likely, I'll just quit gaming and finally become an adult. Given the sorry state of the game industry these days, that's probably the right answer.

In that case I recommend the The Elder Scrolls series, especially Morrowind and Oblivion. Fallout 3 is also good.

I grabbed all of the X-Coms for three bucks recently. Reserve three bucks for when that bolt of lightning strikes again.

Were Darkfool ever to reconsider his stance on 1st person, he should give Skyrim a go.

    Skyrim?
On my experience i enjoyed morrowind more than skyrim, and there are some graphical mods that make it lookok by today's standards, so try first morrowind!

Morrowind is better, yes. But Morrowind doesn't have Cicero.

Funny, you'd think after spending so long hanging out of a helicopter toting a gun, you'd be better at COD.

Imagine a COD campaign that takes a year to finish and may or may not involve any actual combat.

Imagine a COD campaign where you don't get in slow-mo every mission, and you can't survive a missile in your vehicle.
