How in the world do I get those men to leave the sacred elven grounds near Qintarra? I thought that maybe it has something to do with the Altar just to the north, but I have no clue what to offer it. And as a side question, does the Heron Device from Tarrant have any significant value? Do I give it to someone?

All right man, i guess you have tried to attack them, when u hit one of them some kinda magick pops up and kills you and your team, the trick is to make the humans attack you, ask your followers to wait, go into turn-based combat, let the humans hit, as soon as they hurt they will be dead(DO not attack them). Easy!
Also if your inteligence is high you might get an option in the dialogue such as: tell the humans that you come from Bates, it will scare them away.
    Good luck!

The Heroin device is an item that the thieves guild have their greedy eyes on, and my solution to Falcon's Ache was to insult the humans until they attacked me, to which the elven spirits took great offensive and gave the humans much more wicky-wack than they expected.
