I have a mage with a Magical Aptitude (MA) of 50%. If he wears chain gloves he has a penalty to his critical chance if I am reading the description correctly. Is that the only penalty for using tech items? Is there any way to see how tech an item is? If you don't know what I am talking about, just put the cursor over each item in your inventory. Some are tech, some magical, and some neutral. I think the concept of chainmail being a tech item instead of a neutral item like studded leather is stupid BTW.
Most items lean slightly towards either magick or technology in some way. There are probably many factors involved, but as Smithy is a technological discipline, it's not surprising to me that most armour is technologically inclined. Technology is based on the use of tools - so pretty much every item is technological - it is just that some are 'more' technological than others. One way to look at it is in terms of complexity - the hundreds (thousands?) of metal links that make up chainmail are more complicated than the leather strips that make up leather armour.
To Zen: Items do not normally affect your MA. Purchasing Spells increases MA, and purchasing Tech skills and knowlege in a tech tree decrease it. Backgrounds can also modify it either way.
Ok, but if you do have an aptitude for magic, will using either a magic or an non-magic item have any effect towards the successful use of this item? - Zen
IMO, chain armor shouldn't be a technological item as armors like plate, chain, and leather have been around a few centuries before any significant tech was. If you get some of the leather armor with pistons and other things on it that the orcs wear, then I could see that being a different story. That armor even looks a bit out of Mad Max.
To Blunder: I agree 100% To Zen: If you have a leaning toward Tech, magic items will not function as well. i.e. a +2 sword will only be +1 in your hands. If you have a leaning toward Magic, using tech items will give you an increased chance of critical failure. (As far as I can figure out)
But if you stay somewhat in the middle (learning both sides of things) you can damage and use both sides
Actually, staying in the middle seems to be a powerful option. Low level spells and low level schematics are quite powerful. And as Jureel points out, you can choose the weapon to fit the enemy.
The way i believe it to work (and this is to no-one in particular) is that an item is either Tech, Magical or neither there are not items more tech than others jus simply tech The variation comes with your aptitude. When you highlight an item it will say the chance of it failing if you are the wrong way inclined.... that is my understanding and will need to be confirmed by one of the more intelligent ppl of course
Bad_Buck: Every item i get says no matter what to chance for crit because of apt is 0, doesn't matter if its a techie using magik, or a magik using a gun Is this a bug?
