Sogg is getting snarky

I'm not quite sure what is upsetting Sogg, but his reaction lately has dived down to 20. I'm going to sacrifice some game time and pull up an old save and see if I can figure out just what has caused this, but one thing I need advice on is how to 'give him a drink' to cheer him up as the Prima Guide recommends. I can go to a bar and buy myself drinks, but I don't see any way to buy/give Sogg a drink. Help!

Put drinks in his inventory. If you see wine or absinthe in a store, buy it and then give them to him.

    Please don't misinform people, Grossenschwamm.

When a follower's reaction drops to 20 or below, a new dialog option will appear, letting you ask the follower why they are upset with you, and then you can either find the gift they ask for (usually something from a general store, e.g. dwarven snuff for Magnus, the Earl Grey tea for Gar, etc) or pass a high CH check to get the same reaction boost (+20) without the gift.

Additionally, you can just use a fate point to boost any NPC's reaction (not just a follower).

I had actually put a bottle of wine in his inventory and gotten no positive improvement.

He is now at 21 and tells me he doesn't much like me, even after I spend a CP to raise my CH to 10. I'm using the Charm spell to keep him under control, but he has attacked me before and I doubt the Charm spell is going to help if we start traveling. We are in Ashbury and I've already given him the only bottle of wine in town, so I'm suspecting I have a problem.

Charisma doesn't affect reaction (excep in dialogue), Beauty does. What is your Beauty score, and do you have a background that affects reactions somehow?

It could also be that your alignment is shifting towards evil, which Sogg doesn't like. And even if your alignment is good, you may have committed some atrocity or another that has made Sogg hostile towards you.

Donning a smoking jacket/nice dress and/or a Medallion of Beauty might alleviate the problem temporarily.

Aaargh - I guess I wasted a CP on the CH thinking that CH was important to recruit him in the first place.

Beauty is down to 7 from 8 due to scarring that I'm not sure how to get rid of.

Regarding nasty deeds, none so far, although I have been talking to the Thieves Guild, but haven't done their first quest yet.

I've been using him as my cargo mule, maybe he got tired of that?

CH is still important. I think you need 9 CH or a point spent in Persuasion to recruit Sogg. CH is also the limiting factor in how many followers you can recruit (max number of followers CH/4), if you have 20 CH followers will never leave you no matter how much they despise you. Expert Persuasion grants an additional follower and Master Persuasion means that good characters can recruit evil followers and vice versa.

What Beauty does is that it affects people's reactions to you. Most consider it a dump stat for that reason, though it's sure nice to have 20 BE and have all the people in the world love you.

What was Sogg's reaction to you before it dived down to 20? You're playing a black necromancer, are you sure you didn't pick the Sold Your Soul background?

I don't think that should affect your alignment negatively, but did Sogg comment on it at all? If you have verbose floats on (and perhaps even if you don't), you should notice followers commenting on things you do. I know that Sogg is very particular about evil acts.

    [/quote]

No, that is immaterial. Could you have accidentally hit him?

    Many useful ideas.
-The info on Beauty and other ways to influence other is useful. Didn't notice when Sogg's Reaction dived but I'm sure the lower Beauty number didn't help.
-Didn't sell my soul, just using some Black Necro spells as useful.

Actually, as a result of this mess and not being able to install the newly discovered Extra Animations Pack, I've reinstalled and restarted. Now I will be watching Sogg quite closely.

A doctor should be able to patch up that scar for you if I recall.

Now I know exactly what caused the big problem with Sogg - leaving him to wait dropped him from 47 to 23.

Now he has dropped from 47 to 43 while taking him along everywhere, he is as temperamental as a debutant and is on my short list for replacement if this continues.

I find him and Dog a little too over powered to be completely honest.

I see your point. I often leave Dog 'waiting' so I have the chance to get into some fights and get some experience. But Sogg gets sulky if I do that with him. Thinking of giving him a lighter weapon so there is some fighting left over for me.

And for those on the edge of their seats wondering about my trials and tribulations with sulky Sogg, I have found the answer to making him a happy Ogre - just take him back to his favorite bar in Shrouded Hills and his Reaction pops right back up to 47.

I've put wine in his Inventory, 'used' wine via the Hot Key Bank and drug him into every available bar, all to no avail. But as soon as we walked back into Shrouded Hills, his normally sulky and suspicious personality perked right up to his all time high of 47.

So still a pita, but at least I know a cure for his somewhat dangerous depressions - I have had him attack me. And the walk to Shrouded Hills and back yielded over 2000 gold thanks to the thugs of the M. Hand.

Holy shit, it's like it's a real AI.

Because you know, none of what you talking about is actually programmed in the game.

If not programed, then how is one supposed to cheer this moody half-Ogre, because nothing else seems to work.

Although, I have this faint memory that once upon a time with the original game I used to be able to cheer him up by giving him drinks, somehow - having recently tried every way I can imagine to give him a drink, I have no idea how I could have been doing it.

You're quite right, I forgot about the dialog option. Also, I quoted your post so that akmatov could read it without scrolling up as far.

Sogg did get to 20 and I never got a 'new dialog option'.

Given that the Prima Guide which mention the Earl Gray tea for Gar also mentions 'just buy him a drink' for Sogg - with no indication of how to buy him his drink; I still don't have any idea that the give the follower a cookie type of solution to follower negativity would work.

Given that as far as I know, there is a very limited number of Fate Points available, I saw/see no reason to waste one on Sogg the Sulky every so often just for the pleasure of his company.

Hmm, switch out 'Jesus' and replace it with 'Mohammad' and someone would possibly get a fatwa to kill you . Want to maybe use less offensive language or would you rather continue to be rude and blasphemous knowing Christians wouldn't track you down and cut your throat for it? Just wondering.

I vaguely remember another person coming here with the exact same problem. I'd hope at that time I had mentioned the dialogue option popping up.

Now, I don't see from your other posts or what other members have posted to you that you've ever mentioned what version of the game you're running.

Opps, sorry. I'm playing the GOG version. Somewhere I have the actual original version, but with the GOG version I have no problems getting it to run. Since I can just take Sogg on vacation to SH periodically and get my scars fixed, I figure all is good.
