Smeg, this is weird...

So I have a friend who's a Disgaea freak, and he's been running me through the new game, Absence of Justice. And I was listening to a particular character, thinking "I know you, I know you..."

So, Geoffrey Tarrelond-Ashe makes a comeback. Well, his voice does, anyways. As a manipulative, twisted, evil sumbitch... also called Geoffrey.

Typical. I've heard his voice in two games, and both times, as a twisted, smarmy, evil sumbitch called Geoffrey. What the hell is in this man's contract?

Yeah, Richard Tatum is a pretty good voice actor, I enjoy his voice as well.

Nice link Drog. Professional voice actors are pretty amazing. I wish Hollywood would use them instead of shitty movie celebrities for CGI movies and the like. You'd get a way, way better performance.

If voice actors were a feudal nation, this man would be their King.

 

As if, he can't hold a candle to The Real King of Voice Acting.

 

Tony Jay was also one of the best. I loved his role as the Elder God in Legacy of Kain.

 

It's kind of funny that Mark Hamil does a lot of cartoon voices.

I love that James Earl Jones is in Command and Conquer and Micheal Ironside.

 

One of my favorite 'old school' voice actors was
Paul Frees
He did a lot of Disney and Rankin-Bass work.

 

He and Simon Templeman are both high ranking personal favourites. The sneering descriptions of the artifacts and spells in Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain was the beginning of my love for literature.

How is that we're having a voice-actor fanfest and nobody has mentioned Michael Bell or Crispin Freeman yet?

 

I don't come at voice acting from the anime angle at all, so I have no idea who any of those people are.

 

Michael Bell isn't really anime though... Cartoons

I would have thought you would have come across some of Michael's game work though. Some of those games aren't exactly small names.

Crispin Freeman however is and I can say I've actually heard some of his work in that very limited repertoire of dubbed anime I've watched.

I tend not to watch dub, but while preferring sub I tend to read manga more.

 

As a side note, I generally prefer subtitles in every possible iteration. It preserves the original quality, intent, and subtleties of the native actor's performance. I remember watching "Hero" for a second time dubbed and I wanted to kill myself. It helps when the original actors do their own dub, that that is somewhat rare.

 

I hate dubbed movies. Nearly every movie that is dubbed, are done so terribly. Subtitles are preferred.

 

What I hate are dubbed games. I'll never understand why the developers find the need to kill part of the game with completely replacing the voice actors. Not once have I ended up with buying the game in the shop, installing it, raging, uninstalling, putting it on the shelf and downloading the original game from a torrent because nooo, there's no other legal way to get the game in it's original language without getting it from out of the country, making the game cost several times as much.

I'm recently playing Planescape Torment, I was so very happy to read that Tony Jay will be the voice of the Transcendent One and so pissed when at the Mortuary Morte greeted me in motherfuckin' Polish. As for now the voice acting seems quite nice in the game, but still the unpleasant taste stays. Why isn't there an option to choose your language before the installation? Why, I ask?

In Arcanum, the installation was in two stages, first the game, second the polonisation+patch, so I could just make the first step and then get the patch from the Interwebs. This should be made a rule applying to all translated games. And remember, if you will become a game developer, choose subtitles over dubbing or I'll come at night and eat your dog.
