Question on Stats (reducing)

My PE (perception) stat decreased by 1 point for no discernible reason. At least none that I could tell... What might have caused this? And if it is explained somewhere in the manual, what page might that info be on? The manual has no index or table of contents. Not a good thing. Loving the game so far, though. Thanks a lot.

 

Did you put on a hat of some sort?

 

Are you wearing spectacles while having a PE of 8 or above? Or have you been scarred?
I'm not sure if scarring can cause PE damage, but it's caught me by surprise a few times...
Or...did you put any sort of helmet on...

 

Does one's perception decrease at night/during poor lighting? I'll have to check later, but that might be a reason.

 

So I see that today's leitmotiv is low perception.

Is the number of perception value have a red colour?
Were you drinking alcohol?
Are you wearing any hexed or unindentified magical items?
Were you having sex with Belle at madam Lil's?
Check your Log Book for scars in the kills & injuries section and curses in blessings & curses section.

Thanks to all for the help. Yes, it turns out I was wearing a 'Charmed Helmet' (PE-1, among other stat changers). The other advantages seem to make it worth it to keep the helmet on... I've also been scarred a couple of times, reducing my 'beauty'. Is there a way later in the game to find someone or something that can help me in that department? A yes or no will suffice. And thanks again for all the quick help.
