This in from Eric Astor: I would greatly appreciate it if you would post this important piece of news. There is a serious threat to the freedom of Americans to use computers... it is called the SSSCA, a proposed bill backed by the media companies to force all digital devices to have a "security device," or policeware, installed. This would restrict what can and cannot be done with any computer, PDA, etc. Also, this bill would make disabling the policeware component a federal crime, with fines up to $50,000 for a first offense and up to $100,000 for a second offense. This would affect technology everywhere. Even Intel and Microsoft are opposing this bill, along with nearly every other technology company that's ever heard of it. We need more help opposing this bill! There's an online petition in progress at http://www.petitiononline.com/SSSCA/petition.html, and feel free to search any message boards on the Internet for more information. Please, sign petitions, write letters, and do what you can to stop this bill. Thank you.

I am not paranoid about security and personal info over the net but, I run 2 firewalls and an anti-virus program at the same time. I think there is nothing worse than spyware crap that is sending info about your internet activities to some jackass server where people do unknown to us things with it. It's my computer, my ISP, my life, so all who would try to insert some sort of device that could even be supposed to do something completely different in my pc are my enemies. It's like how it was with PGP. I won't start this discussion if no one knows what I'm talking about.

Well, you already know how I feel about it. Best firewalls I can get and anti-virus. You have to protect yourself with broadband.
But back to Raist's post --- Never mind. It's not worth it. If something like that ever happens somebody will find a way around it.

    1) Jinxed it's only in America. Don't sweat it .

    2) Feldon, I think you are forgetting all about the civil libertarian groups that the USA seems to be plagued with. I don't think that they'd sit quietly by.

I didn't forget about them. I just didn't want to get into that whole quagmire.
The whole thing is so ridiculous, anyway, that it doesn't deserve comment.

I read in a newpaper that the music indust is loseing money for the last two or 3 years after they thought they won they big fright with Napper. It was than Pyrrhic Victory as Napper was bring in more money to the music industry than their where loseing. Now they will have than harder time getting rid of the other music shareing service as they are base in different nations with different laws. The music they make to day doesnot interest me at all okey that my opin but why would I shell out 20 dollar or more to buy music that doesnot appeal to me. It seem I than not the only one not buying music. In the digital age their either need to drop copyright law alltogether or
change the copyright law to recognite people want backup copies of the media than you cannot stop people from pirateing digital media.
