Okay, I've looked everywhere for the answer to this and appaerntly it's so obvious that nobody even mentions it. How on earth do I use the pick locks skill? I have 1 point in it and I'm an apprentice as well... help!

Hello and welcome to the forum DragonDart!

Many, many people have had problems with issues similar to this because the Arcanum manual, although big, seems to miss out a lot of these little 'obvious' points.

The answer is indeed simple. You need a set of picklocks (crude picklocks, picklocks or mechanical picklocks). Just use them as an item. The best thing to do is equip them in a 'quick-slot' (left-drag them into one of the ten boxes above the message window) and then smiply left-click on them when you want to use them and then click on the object you wish to pick. (ie. click on lockpicks, then click on a door).

    Hope this helps.

So what I've gathered from your post is that I must have lockpicks to attempt a lockpicking? I guess I was spoiled by Fallout 2 in which you don't need anything special to use the skills... In the skill menu lock picking doesn't even appear, is it supposed to?

No, it's used automatically when you use your lockpicks. I've actually just edited my previous post because I realised I hadn't mentioned about having lockpicks, but when I finished, you'd posted again.

Great, thanks so much for the help Ferret! I hate asking newbie questions, but I'm glad there are people willing to field them here.

if you started with picklock you get a set at the beginning. Also it's auto-skeleton key not mechanical picklock.

Thanks - I couldn't remember the name, so I just described it.
