Since I now know how to set up phpBB3 forums, I'm thinking that I should update this place to the newest php build at some undisclosed time in the future provided that I can pull it off without losing anything in the process. The spambots are driving me crazy, and this place currently has security holes the size of Texas.

    Yay or nay?

If it helps keep out spambots then I don't see why not.

As long as we don't lose our RP archives, I'm for it :)

I worry about losing the skin, and the fact that the transition will take me weeks to iron out.

Like when ingesting a pudding, the skin is my favorite part. Isn't it possible to customize the forum in the same way after the upgrade?

I'm all for less spambots, though.

Yea. No rush, no pressure. But it'll be worth the effort.

When the Codex upgraded to phpBB3, it was fairly odd at first but pretty cool once you got used to the changes. I'm for.

    Nay.

I like the obsolecence because this is a forum for a vintage, steampunk game.

However, if you deem it less work to upgrade the security perimeter than it would be to continue policing the compound, then go for it.

I'm for the conversion, even if it means that everything is lost.
    Agreed.

I'm sure Muro has a back up of this website anyway so if we lost the information then we would probably be able to retrieve it.

Heh, it'd be good if one of those autoagree spambots posted here.

2 things would need to be kept/maintained somehow for it to be worthwhile I think:

    1) The skin. Which is probably tough. Even a rough approximation would be fine.

    2) The content. If I can't complain about people who complain about gravedigging decades-old threads in the Arcanum sections half my purpose for browsing these threads will have gone away.

IIRC an upgrade has been attempted before. DU gave up after some (all?) threads were missing or weren't imported properly.

Then again this was back when phpBB3 was still new, and the magic responsible for upgrading from previous versions might have been fixed by now.

A phpBB3 skin shouldn't be too hard to put together but we may need some new graphics to reskin all the fancy features. Alternatively, we could just ignore everything we don't have graphics for and remove it from the base skin.
