Well kiddies, i've finally managed to get my system back together and running again after spending to better part of the day (and night) fucking around trying to reinstall windows and not have it bitch and moan about every fucking thing i try and do. But it's done and i've gotten the lastest updates for drivers, norton and windows. It's been five hours since my last crash/lock-up/blue screen 'o' whining, so i think i might be in the clear....... anyway here's the spec's for my system, all in all it's not too bad.

    Sound: Creative Live!

Great that you've got it back together. I'll PM you my address so you can send it to me, all costs payed by you as we'd agreed. Right? :D

And seeing as you're a barman - add a few bottles of Lauders with that, will you?

Seriously though - good system you've got there. You should be able to drive most anything with it. It had been perfect if you'd got a better graphics card, but I guess that just had been the icing on the cake.

Ah, I really should get to upgrading my comp... but there's this little issue with money. I never seem to have enough of those little fuckers. Oh well, I can play Arcanum and ToEE, so I guess I can wait just a while longer with that.

Well, at least I'm not on a shitty modem. Radiolink, blessed radiolink (and you know what, we're going to get fibre - fibre baby :-o )

what? a better one?, i'm barely using this one's capability's as it is, the only game i've got that come's close to maxing is Home world2 and even then there's bugger lagging or slowdown's.

I can understand your excitment, fibre is an important part of any balanced diet......... and it makes you poo regular and normal, so you're not straining and crying whilst you do your "business".

    My new baby:

    AthlonXP 2500
    Ati Radeon 9600pro
    512/400 ddr ram

Nobodie, that dual channel DDR thing is a hoax, it gives you a grand smacking 2% efficiency boost.

Actually, dual channel really only works if you have 2 sticks of RAM, because the bus for RAM is shared. Thus with dual channel, they have two separate buses for RAM, and the idea is to have one stick on each bus, which increases performance. Having multiple sticks on the bus just gives increased capacity, at the cost of performance. So, performance wise you're better off with the 512 nobodie, rather than the 1024. Capacity wise, you're not.

Your vid card could also be better (you splashed out on a 2800+ for fuck's sake!), I don't know what that second 20gig hdd is for, and you should have upgraded your burner as well.

Here ends the Book of Jar.

[envy]Nice puters you got there[/envy]. One question though: Jinxed why on earth did you buy 9600? It's either 9500 (which can be easily overclocked to 9700) or 9700.

Because you can't get the 9500 in Poland. You never really could and now since 9500 is off the production line it's really gone. Of course I would get it if I could, but it wasn't there. The next level card available was the 9800pro, which costs 500$.

You can actually though it's pretty hard to find I admit. Same's with 9700 though the situation is much better here. A friend of mine bought himself one about a month ago. Bad news is that although 9800 is getting cheaper (costs around 350) right now it is going to be cancelled in favour of 9800 PRO and 9800 SE. So there goes my ingenious plan of buying it when the price drops to 250$ :(

Yeah, tough situation. As much as I would love to own a high end card, it's getting really ridiculous. I saw GF FX 5900 on allegro. The price? 800$. What the hell are people thinking?

What they are thinking? For a good chance, not at all.

Fancy that... humping up 800$ for a videocard. Heck, we're closing onto idiocy there. I'm unsure if my entire comp, screen and all, would be worth that amount of money. Of course, it's a tad old, but anyway, I can still run most anything on the market today.

Well, at least you could hold the questionable privilegue of being the coolest kid in the neighbourhood with that card. Other than that, I fail to see any real practical uses with that it that couldn't be done with something far cheaper.

Better wait a while with such things. Seeing how fast the standards of technology advance, you can probably get it for half the prize in like 3 months...

yea... I think what's worse than cards is cases... you can buy a generic, no lights, no windows case for $20-50, and yet a high-quality case is $200-400? what the hell? why do we need to pay ten tymes as much when you've cut a hole in the thing, stick some burnt sand in it, attached a couple neon lights, and call it fancy? and I'm running a dual 1.3ghz drive, I can't tell you the rest of the specs, mainly cause I don't know'em, but that's about the most amazing thing about my computer... no wait, the fact it runs even though I crash it pretty much two to three tymes a day...

That reminds me, my pc is virtually crash less right now. Only during overlocking tests has it happened and that's my fault. All my previous computers had some sort problems.

There's actually a fuck of a lot of difference between a $20-$50 case and a $200-$400 one. For starters, there's simple build quality. A more expensive case will be made from better materials, be easier to open up and access the inside, and probably won't feature nasty corners. Oh yeah, it'll also probably come with a PSU that actually provides the rated power, it'll have room for more than 1 case fan, and it'll have pretty good airflow dynamics.

Whereas, on a piece of shit case like you buy, you'll get a cramped mini-tower case, have to cram all your components in, you'll get constant crashes from the PSU not being able to supply the power it says it will, airflow will be crap (not only because of all the cramped components) because there'll be room for at most 2 case fans, and everything will run at higher temps, thus reducing the longevity of your equipment.

As for all that modding crap, if you're really into it you do it yourself. Pre-made mods will get you scorned by others. A good case will last for years, but a bad one will make you replace key components on a regular basis.

(I was thinking about doing a proverb-style "A good case will last for years, but a bad one will reduce you to tears", but it didn't seem quite right.)

actually, my point was the pricing, and I can't buy a piece of shit case because my mother board is too big to fit in them, and I just picked up a 200gb harddrive, so I'm really happy, once I figure out my comp's stats I'll post'em on here... I'm thinking of putting a few points into memory so I can cast more spells.

Splahed out?, not really, out of $750AUD for the whole mobo/cpu/memory order i had change for subway.

The 20giger was my original HD that has 98 on it now for all the old games that i've got and don't seem to want to work on XP.

There are more upgrades coming, first thing on the to buy list is some new couch's and lounge chairs then DVD burner and a shit load of games. i don't think i'm going to need a new vid card for a while, this one should see me through for quite a while regarding performance and making games look pretty.

I gather you mean that you didn't get the WHOLE LOT for $750?

How do you boot up from the second HDD? Is that an option you've setup? I'm looking at a potential dual boot system myself but haven't done the usual google for help routine yet.
