Firstly, I didn't use my original copy of the game. I got my install disc here but my play disc is nowhere to be found, so I resorted to bittorrent for ISO's from which to install and play the game... If I can't work this out I may just break down and buy a second time. So I install and go to character generation, everything is fine, I start the game, and... No Virgil, no corpses, just the normal animals, kite guys, and puddles of blood where the corpses would normally be at the crash site. The cave did have the guy and spirit rising out, but that's the only other humanoid I've encountered. I didn't try going to Shrouded Hills. I haven't used any editor, mods, or anything. What the hell? In browsing the forum I found one other thread (a year old) complaining of this strange bug, but it didn't come to any helpful conclusion. Is there a solution for this that does not involve finding another copy of the game?
If you can, try get hold of a no-cd crack (not available for the latest patch though, so you'll have to find one of the earlier patches as well). That might work.
The Arcanum v1.0.7.4 [ENGLISH] Fixed EXE on http://www.gamecopyworld.com/ works as a no-cd crack. I used it with my back-up copy and now I can play without the disc. And that's with the latest patch.
That "fixed" .exe is faulty. I used it for one game as an experiment and Virgil never talked to me during the plot points. I suppose some people might consider that "fixed", but I don't.
This isn’t related to Arcanum, but since you brought running a game without the CD. I have a game called “Star trek TNG Birth of the Federation†It seam to have a unsolvable problem with the CD.
