ok, i just got the game, arcanum, and i was wonderin if any of you could give me some tips as to how to get started, and is there a way to make the dimentions on the game alittle bit better. like, how to get rid of the big black squares behind the tree's and the black triangles that cover up half the ground.
Well, firstly, check your game edition. If you'ren't running the 1074 patch, download it here. Also, I can't say I've heard of your issue... it sounds to me like a video conflict somewhere. What's the resolution you're running the game in, and what's the resolution your desktop is set to? Also, are you attempting to use a widescreen monitor to run this game?
ok, i got the patch on, but the spots didnt change. my graphics card is alittle outdated, but it was ahead of its time for a '95 card, and my motherboard doesnt have any slots for the new ones. im running 24-bit color at 1064x768 pixels. before now i hadnt tried running the game in anything but the default resolution, but im about to try it in 256 colors and 640x480 resolution (via properties box). and no, its a normal flatscreen tube monitor.
ok, i finished trying it with the new color resolution and nothing changed. the game is playable, but it is just severely lacking in environment with the spots everywhere. im checking my directx compatabilities soon, and il get back to you when i do.
You're going to have to reboot, then install the patch, then try again. Since you're playing widescreen, there should be an option for the game to run in 640x480 in 256 colour without you having to change the settings on the computer. It's either right click on the icon on your desktop or within the arcanum folder, or there may be an option within your display settings such as 'set applications to run 640x480.' As for getting started, read up on familiarising yourself with each of the screens. You DO NOT want to have to click your way round uneccessarily.
well, the triangles are still there, but that seems to be the least of my problems now. i just defragged my harddrive, and now it wont let me save games anymore. should i just reinstall the whole thing?
When I first got Arcanum I didn't have a graphics card and so only used Intel graphics. I had the same problem with all the black chunks on the screen and I was only able to make it work by playing under the Arcanum (safe mode) option and that worked fine, albeit a little slow. As for your saving problem I think reinstalling would be the way to go if you can't save, As an aside it now works great on my MAc, so it's nice to finally be able to play this great game with the graphics turned up a bit.
Goofy Grafix I was getting some really wacked out grafix myself. I got it cleared up by editing the shortcut to force the game into full screen mode. - r-click shortcut - select properties - add -fullscreen to the end of the "Target" Line Hope that helps DMCain
Thanks... Apparently the HUD part of the UI is an overlay of sorts with a transparent part in the middle that causes random graphic problems. -fullscreen on the command line takes out the HUD leaving you with a larger view of the world. I find that it's easier to see stuff on the screen with less scrolling (and no random graphic glitches). It also lets you see bad-guys well before they start beating on you giving you time to start combat before they get into melee range. Very helpful for any ranged char. DMCain
