You're the only one in your party who'll be able to do that, yes. But you can also ask smithies and some merchants. After you've tried to lockpick it, right? Wait a day and it'll be in the locked status again. Or break it in. It's one of the 8 technological disciplines. You have to learn it by yourself so you'll have to invest cp's into it (no "apprentice"/"expert"/"master" status to be acquired by paying people or doing quests). You're welcome.
Any blacksmith and any junk dealer can fix things, for a price. Personally, I never learn repair. First off, save before lock picking. If you haven't, you'll have to wait for a day, or blast the door to hell.
Don't use slashing weapons to break doors, by the way, you'll damage them. Better use axes and hammers.
Which you damage just as easily  Weapons that don't get damaged: Any ranged weapons- guns, bows, chakrams, boomerangs Any Arcane weapons (except possibly for the Arcane staves) Axe of Lost Time
Not in my game, then. I've been opening chests and doors for ages without damaging my axe. Haven't tried it on safes and iron doors, though.
The best axe for opening doors is the pyro axe, one hit and just about every door or chest will open.
