I was looking through all my half-finished mods the other day, and decided to restart my work on one. The basic idea is to recreate the Vendigrothian civilization either before Arronax destroyed it, or after he rebuilt it in the good ending. Theres not really a story as such right now, but I really liked Vendigroth & its technology, and thought recreating it might make a good mod. I'm looking for any opinions or suggestions anybody may have. If I decide to continue, I would also appreciate some help, IE someone to handle dialogue or someone to help with planning, et cetra.
If you're looking for ideas on Vendigroth, then I suggest you contact Nbrosz, as he's Vendigroth mad, and knows a fair bit about it, and has some good ideas as to how it should be.
You got that right! Hey, Chrisent42, where have you been, lately? Did you get the PM I sent you? First of all, I would like to know HOW you figure you are going to be able to show it up and running again, as well as guards that lock you in prison. As far as I know, the only avalible Vendigroth walls/stuff looks like it is in ruins. How are you going to make it look brand new? You can make nice streets (the ones it allows are just fine) and make the lights shine (with vendiglow 1 & 2), but the walls and doors always look crummy. How do you suppose you are going to fix that?
As far as showing Vendigroth up & running, all I can say is that I am working on that. I can make a full Vendigrothian building, but, as you pointed out, the windows are broken. That is a problem, but also, there are no roofs upon the buildings. Those is by far my biggest problems right now. As far as the police are concerned, that is just an idea. If it turns out to be completely impossible (Which I don't think is the case) then I will get rid of it. What I have right now is this: A complete layout of the city, including names & purposes for all buildings; A bunch of items enhanced so they can stand up to more powerful Vendigrothian items; Complete maps for a few buildings, such as a mansion you will be able to buy, a couple of factories, etc. So, anyway, if I could just figure out what type of buildings to use, or how to modify existing ones, the difficulties are rather less significant. EDIT: In reply to your PM, I would like any help I can get. I'm looking for some help on the conceptual design & story. I've already got another guy on board who might help with the construction.
Well, Vendigroth is supposed to be build in catacombs, not above ground, so that solves your no roof problem. Could you send me the layout of the city? I would like to see it. Perhapse, make Vendigroth look for the "Lost Secrets" of the All-Father. Since their extinction, they have not been able to figure out how to properly sacrifice to the All-Father, therefore, they are having trouble re-creating their old technology. All they have for technology is old artifacts they have found of themselves (have special stores sell old artifact technology/schematics, but have most sell normal stuff). Your main quest is to search for the long-lost secrets of Velorien in an ancient Vendigroth temple (You will not find the temple right away, parts of the story will lead up to it, like in the original Arcanum module). There, you must pass 3 tests of whit, might, and courage, and then interpret the ancient words of the temple's library. Then, you must bring them back to Vendigroth, and help Vendigroth defeat the Magick Society, who wants to destroy it once again. Like it?
First: If you recall, in the endgame slide for Vendigroth, the city is quite above ground. Personally, I would want it underground, but that image implies otherwise. I like your idea, but it removes one thing I would have liked by making the Vendigrothian technology mostly unremarkable for the majority of the module's story. Ah, But wait: The endgame says that Arronax raised the city from its ruins and it once again became a place of awe and wonder. That seems to imply that they regained all of their technological wisdom. I am revising the city layout as we speak, filling some empty blocks, etc. But when it is finished, I will post an address or email it to you.
But does it say it happens right away? Maybe you could imply (or show) Arronax resserecting a bunch of people at the way beginning of the mod, they say thanks, they talk for awhile, and then realize that they have lost all memory.
You do have a point, and I suppose it would work, but I think it would be more fun to make & play if there was full Vendigrothian technology. The idea of a battle between Magick and Vendigroth is good though. I was toying with the idea of Tulla fighting Vendigroth, IE: Vendigroth's tech is making all of the magick fail, so they bring out the proverbial "big engines" and fight back with some powerful magick, Vendigroth retorts, etc. I am definately in favour of creating the city underground, and in the Vendigrothian style. Now, also, if they are underground why do they need windows? There's not going to be much of a view. So we might be able to solve the broken window problem. PS: What is your response to my plea for assistance?
Can I just point out that, maybe, you could have underground sections of Vendigroth - not all of it could be above ground. Also, to make police take you to jail, you could do something similar to the ring of Brodgar scenario. You could make the guards non-hostile, but put a trigger in the game so that if you did something nasty, they would engage you in conversation. Then, after saying something like 'you are under arrest' or something equally lame, then it would automatically activate a trigger to teleport you to a jail cell. Of course, followers would be a problem as they would be teleported with you. And losing your inventory could also be a problem - maybe you could either just give everything away to a designated inventory storing chest or person, or you might have open a shop inventory where you would effectively sell everything for nothing, and it would not allow you to exit the shop until everything except your money is sold (it won't allow money selling). You would then go through a similar process when you are released.
On the underground issue: My plan is to have a railway station and a gate to the underground on the surface, then have 4-5 levels of underground, each one being for factories or for houses, etc. Alternately, the largest and most important buildings, IE the Governor's mansion, would be above ground, and everything else would be underground. As far as the police are concerned, that is almost exactly what I had planned. I haven't yet looked at the existing guard scripting, so I don't know exactly how to procede yet. I think that the police probably would arrest your followers too anyway. They would probably help you in the fight, and thus would also be guilty. The one issue I see with the police script is the fact that is makes arrest inevitable-theres no way out, since the policeman would always teleport you. I will probably include an option to try and bribe the policeman, with success based upon some stat or skill.
For the maps of underground Vendigroth ruins, I have found some screenshots of the townmaps of them. I post the web address or post pictures.
