That is an automatic response. But it is not a guarrenty of success. It better for you to have unlock ability either as a mage or manual unlock. NPC skill just earn unlock ability very slow.

To get an NPC to unlock just try it yourself and then he will stand in a try it. If it did not work then retry the unlock sequence.

Make sure you are not in the way - if the follower can't get to the object, he can't attempt to act on it.

but if you or your follower fail then you run the chance of it jamming and then you wuill have to break it down
and it is quite a hassle to collect their weapons so they don't damage them while following your lead bashing in a door or barrel

If a locked chest or door becomes jammed just go do something else for a while and come back in a few days and it will be unjammed. No need to ruin weapons just to open a chest.

It's been a while since I played with a follower, but I think that your follower also has to have a set of lockpicks in their inventory.

The follower does not need lockpicks in their inventory.

Sebastian is an example of a follower who gets 5 ranks in Lockpicking, I often have him unlock things for me. He has no lockpicks in his inventory. If he jams it and time is not of the essence I simply wait a day or two and come back and try again.

Well I seem to remember that for the halfling in the Pit in Dernholme to open doors (I think he's called Tolo Underhill) I had to give him back the lockpicks which I had just taken out of his inventory.

Lockpicks boost skill. A follower will only volunteer to do something if he has the highest skill. It may be you, or someone else in your party, had a higher lockpick skill than Tollo until the moment when you gave him the lockpicks.
