The Unlocking Cantrip worked just fine for me but then I didn't play a mage character throughout the whole game. Are there many locks you're having problems with or just particular cases?

It's probably because your mage isn't experienced enough...

Every lock has a difficulty value... and is checked against picklock skill. In the case of the Unlocking Cantrip, it is checked against your mage's Magic Aptitude.

If your magic fails and you need to open the lock right now, try whack on the door/container with an axe, or use damaging spells(e.g. Fireflash)/explosives.

Since Unlocking Cantrip will attract attention, I think where you would use the spell on, you could use some violence too

IIRC there's some containers that have no hit points - e.g. the safe containing the iron clan key in Tarant. I don't think those can be opened by other means.

Even the "impossible" locks can be opened with unlock cantrip if you use a fate point. One instance of this is the iron safe in Tarant. Another is that annoying quest in the wheel clan where you have to retrieve the "family heirloom" for the old dwarf. Rather than pixel hunt the ground for the key, I just burn a fate point and unlock the door.
