I have been prowling the archives for some assistance on a tech character build and noticed something about reading books to boost stats. I have not encountered books ,other than those needed to progress the plot, as of yet in the game. Where can these be found?
At the Tarant University you can buy books that boost your technological expertise, that is, the general know-how needed to build stuff from the found schematics, which typically require knowledge in two fields of technology. You can save character points this way. Also, I believe they are needed if you employ the Essence of Intellect cheat to buy technological disciplines without raising INT... without the INT, you don't have the required expertise even though you have the skill (so you could build an elephant gun with a 9 IN for example). Am I making any sense?
If I got this right, the books raise the scale of your tech rating. The scale that can go from 0 to 100 in tech or magic. The higher the number in tech the more success you have of succedding in the building of found schematics. Correct?
Me and my usual incoherence... Expertise is a measure of your know-how within a specific technological discipline. Whenever you purchase ranks in, say, gunsmithy, your expertise in gunsmithy increases. What you described up there is called aptitude, which is your general inclination towards magick/technology. Surprisingly enough, aptitude has no bearing on found schematics. An elven archmage could use found schematics with impunity. Well, enough babbling, here's how it works: EXAMPLE: A pyrotechnic axe requires expertise in smithy and explosives. You have invested heavily in the smithy discipline and easily meet the requirements, however you haven't even considered the explosives discipline, meaning you don't have any expertise in explosives. However, if you buy an explosives manual at the university, your expertise will increase without having to spend a single character point on explosives and you can make that damn axe. GAH! Did I make myself sufficiently understood now? You anglophones and your stupid language...

You could've just said 'look at the blue number in the uppppper left corner of the discipline in question.' That number will rise every time you put a character point into a schematic of that discipline. It will also rise a little when you keep a copy of that discipline's text book in your inventory. Each ingredient for a schematic has a number value that the blue number in your specific discipline must be greater than in order to build the item of that schematic. EXAMPLE: The found schematic Fortifier requires Varham's Aqua Vitae (a chemistry ingredient) and Wine (an explosives ingredient) to create. Varham's has a base understanding in Chemistry of X in order to use it in a schematic and Wine has a base understanding in Explosives of Y to use it. Compare these values to that blue number (your base understanding) in your character's Chemistry and Explosives disciplines. If they are greater than the given values respectively, then you can create a Fortifier with the components. If any of them are less, you can't. However, if you buy a text book from the Tarant University in either of these disciplines, you'll get a small boost to that blue number in the corresponding discipline which could raise it above the component's value, thus letting you create the Fortifier when you previously couldn't without spending a character point in that discipline.
