Well, i just started playing the game (means i spent only about 20 hours on it) and i'm now level 8. I wanted to go for pick pocket cause i want to get the ring of influence from morat in grant's tavern (references may be wrong since i'm playing the german version). To become an apprentice i probably need to talk to the thieves. Tried that, but they just wanted to have my money. Then i read that i need to talk to a guy near pettiboones residence in Tarant. But I can't start a dialogue with him. Am i too good (30) or do i need to raise my persuasion? Thanks for your help.

Talk to the thieves in Shrouded Hills and they tell you a little about the guild but they may not be needed to get in the guild.

Talk to the person in Madam Lil's brothel (what a fine establishment). He should tell you who to talk to.

How did you become so good? My thief at level 8 had at least a -30 alignment. I guess I stole too much, but it was hell of fun.

first off hello and welcome to the forum, now to become a member of the thieves guild you should talk to the thieves wannabes at shrouded hills till he mentions them or/and accept the quest to steal the funerally stone for mrs pettingbone, then you should be able to get training from guild members, (this from memory only, sorry if it doesn't help)

as mentioned above, you could'v known about the thieves underground if you have convinced them that you were a thief (shrouded hill)

or you could do pettiboone's quest...after which you could talk to the guy standing in the alley near pettiboone's house and get invited to the underground

Help Mrs.Pettibone retrieve the elven pillar. After that, news will spread around and the guy outside will regconise you and recomend you to their leader.

Thanks for your warm welcome. Seems i have to convert somewhat to the dark side to become a thief. Well, for me it's just about pick pocketing, makes things just cheaper. Well, does that affect your alignment? Like every steal one point minus?

It does lower but it is like 1 point every seveal times you steal something. So it is almost unnoticeable. If you have 30 good you will never get it to evil with just pick pocketing unless you really try hard.

Need to bump this up. I did that Pettiboone quest and retrieved the elven pillar. I'm also part now of the thieves underground. But whenever i encounter a thief he just wants 25 coins, no chance to become an apprentice. I already found the experts in Tarant, but that doesn't help much without being an apprentice. Any advice?

Vollinger in Dernholm can teach you apprentice pick pockets. Apparantly most thieves can teach it to you as well once you are part of the underground, but if you have no luck there Vollinger is another option...

The best way to become a members of the Thieves Underground is to do Cedric Appleby's jobs. Sneaking into Gilbert Bates' house and stealing the journal gets you auto-entry into the Underground . Hell, everyone in Tarant hated me except for the Thieves .
