I'm playing as a frankenstein monster with an intelligence of 9 boosted to 19 with a potion. When I buy tech manuals, they are increasing the appropriate skills by only 1% each, instead of the 19% you'd expect. The Frankenstein's Monster character class uses 'dumb dialogue'; I'm guessing that there's something going on backstage that forces INT to be read as 1 for dialogue purposes, and the tech manuals are doing the same thing. I was hoping to play a tech, but without manuals I'm effectively barred from all those fun cross-discipline learned schematics. Any pointers?
First the easy (but unlikely) possible solution: Drop the books. Take the potion. Pick the books back up. However I doubt this will work as it seems the dumbness of your character is hard coded. The backgrounds make use of lines in effect.mes. I've checked the frankenstein and savant backgrounds and there is no mention of setting intelligence to 1 in the effect file. Checking dialogue files, there is no specific reference to these 2 backgrounds so somehow the game automatically detects these characters as having int of 1 regardless of their true int. So basically, it's an oversight and you are probably screwed.
no. NOOOOO!!! Well thanks, Tongs: that's a fair amount of trouble you've gone to on my behalf, and I appreciate it. You're right that dropping and reacquiring the books doesn't work. Too bad there isn't a fix for it, but at least now I know that. Let's hear it for closure! D.
No problem. I enjoy rooting about through the files as it often leads to new ideas for my mod. Also, welcome to the forums.
