I just returned from seeing LotR + drinking a couple of pints at a local Irish pub, so bear with me.

    Opinion?
The movie rocks. It kicks ass. It rules.

As a friend who just started reading LotR (and is a bit of a movie expert) noted: "This movie is good for people who haven't read LotR, but is great for people who have."
Basically, a bit of the story is lost on people who haven't read Fellowship of the Ring yet. There are a number of well-known omissions, and Peter Jackson takes a number of shortcuts: Arwen instead of Glorfindel, early explanation of a number of things, and heavy short-cutting of the "Frodo leaves the Shire", "prancing pony" and "meeting in Rivendel" scenes. And a number of other things.
However, with each and every one of these, you'll become convinced Jackson did the right thing. After watching the first half of the movie (90 minutes) and still feeling rushed, you'll realize that this was the only way to fit Fellowship in 188 minutes.
However, as noted earlier, a number of things are downplayed. Especially the entire Gimli - Galadriel thing was downplayed too much, however, I'm expecting Jackson will touch on the entire elf/dwarf relations thing in the other two movies (and possibly flash-back a bit). After seeing this, I'm inclined to give him a bit of credit.

Sure, there were omissions. Obvious ones. After seeing the movie, I was convinced that the choices made were the right ones.

I also expected Jackson to butcher the story a bit to give the first part an ending that would satisfy the general Hollywood audience, but he didn't. IMO, the tragedy of Boromir was portrayed very well.

Anyway, I'm going to see it again this tuesday. Go watch it.

Either that or...well, some things are better left unsaid...

Can't wait to see this movie! Although, I am of the camp that believes when a book is turned into a movie, it sticks rigidly to the book, although, there were boring parts in the hobbit...I guess if he's cut them out, then that's all well and good...I'm still a person who wants every little detail portrayed like it was in the book...

I have been waiting for two movies to be made before I could die a happy man. The X-men was one The Lord of the rings is now the only thing between me and Mortality. (Before I see it I will have to come up with a new immortality spell, don't want to start aging right there in the middle of the movie)

You're all lucky bastards. LOTR will be shown in Poland no sooner than in February.

I just hope that when I finally see it there won't be lots of annoying noisy kids in the theatre.

Also I hope chairs will prove comfy enough for a 188min movie - or maybe I should get a pillow under my ass.

Well, now I'm considering seeing LOTR at the gold class cinemas - cinemas which are licenced, huge comfy chairs etc etc etc...mmm, have to try that out sometime...

The best cinemas you can find in Poland are those multicinema centres. Chairs are comfy but not that much better than in ordinary cinemas. However I haven't been to to premiere room in one of those so far - perhaps it's better there.

here all the cinemas are the same...
the only thing that matters here is the amount of the noisy little kids that runnig around...thats why i perfer to go to the cinema at late hours.
    p.s.
we should have LOTR at the cinema in 4 days!
    WEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

They were pre-premiere tickets. A friend (who works at another cinema) got them. For free, I might add. I offset getting in for free by buying a big load of beer 'n snacks, though.
I'm gonna see it again on tuesday night.
