Is it possible to edit/add items to the core game? I like playing a half ogre, and have a few more large NPCs in my party, yet the amount of armor (and more importantly, the differences in appearance of the armors) is sorely lacking for large characters. I want to, if nothing else, simply add in some colored suits of large leather - preferably add in some robes too though, since my half ogre is a mage!

In order to do that you would have to animate new sprites which would consist of drawing a few thousand pictures a task that would be all but impossible especially if you lacked the skill to alter your drawings by the tiny amounts required to have a smooth flowing animation for each action.

Is there a (relatively) easy way to get at the existing sprites to recolor them and/or edit them slightly?

Also, you say 'a few thousand pictures' - how is that broken down? Usually 8 degrees are used for stationary, and 4 or 8 degree variants of each action sequence - but what all actions are required?

Sorry guy. Getting to the sprites isn't hard - unpack the Arcanum2.dat, locate the appropriate files, then use ART2BMP.

The problems lie with the facts that:

    1) Every movement has it's own picture. An arm movement is several pictures. A step is several more.

    2) All the different weapons and attire the the sprite uses are different pictures. Same set-up as above. Every little action uses several pictures.

    3) The sprites are packed into multi-image .ART files which we still have no way to reproduce. BMP2ART will only create single images.

    4) To make matters worse, not all the sprites for a racial type are in the same ART file.

Being able to add or modify the characters is a nice dream, but unfortunately, it's just not practical.

well that's just dissapointing. I've played with editing many games in the past, and have had fun toying with sprites and such.

Has no one at Troika ever released the tools they used? The WorldEd seems to be the editor they used to design and work on the game... so they seem to be open to the concept of freely allowing those types of tools into our hands.

Not the original tools or source code. And the WorldEd that was released seems to be a partially gutted version.

I think it was Dark Underlord (don't hold me to that) who once pointed out there seems to be links in the code that led to other functions. Perhaps the original software was more of an all-in-one world creator.

And given that the company has closed down the tools themselves may no longer exist.
