Dernholm Pits

How do I get into the pits in Dernholm?? I've tried insulting the guard but he just attacks me and I have to kill him, that doesn't help. Is there some trick to this?

 

I think you can only get in those at a certian time. I'm not sure of this as I don't quite remember.
