'Kay guys, it's time for another (or the first, depending on how you look at it) "Chalcedony Asks You a Questionâ„¢" topic!
    The question for today is...

What would you like to do?

Work, I mean. If you didn't have to worry about money, if you didn't have a family, if you didn't have to care about what other people thought; what would you like to do? What kind of a job did you see yourself taking up when you were a kid with not a care in the world?

Wow. Great question... and actually one I've thought about a lot lately.

I always wanted to be a writer. I still do, but I know I couldn't make a living at it because I don't have an interest in writing the mass market type of books... if only I were independently wealthy and could lounge around writing :(

I wrote my first "book" in 3rd grade... something like 120 pencil-written pages... and subjected a handful of adults to the misery of reading it (now that I think about it, I wonder how many of them actually did read it??).

Now I'm too much of a critic of my own writing and tend to be very self-defeating, so I rarely finish anything. I get caught up in the "this wouldn't make money" thing and try to change gears to a more consumer-friendly format... and soon crash and burn. It's a vicious cycle.

    Professional

I would be a pro ass-kicker, whenever someone really needed their ass kicked, that would be my job. You know, "damn [person] sure is being annoying, call Icairus" A few minutes later I kick his/her ass.

Why don't we edit that and make it a little more friendly, please?

    Hey, it's worth a try...

Try to go the other way. Every time you find yourself trying to be more consumer-friendly, do the opposite and see how confusing you can make it.
    It'll probably sell millions.

Senses the first signs of thread deterioration... and jumps in to save the ship from sinking!!

A photojournalist. That's what I'd love to be. I want to travel the world and experience new things - how other people live and how they see the world. I wanna see the sights every country has to offer, taste their food, drink their wine.

But not only that. When I come back from a trip I don't want to keep my experiences to myself. I want to share them with the world. Open their eyes and let them see.

I'm so jealous sometimes when I read Times or Reader's Digest. I'm stuck here in uni learning statistics while these buggers are travelling the world and silently mocking me with their accounts of their journeys.

Has anyone here read Time's special double issue (August 19-August 26)? It's titled Asian Journey and narrates a ride on "the Iron Horse from Pakistan to the Pacific". The journalists travelled Asia from end to end on train. Gosh, I nearly ripped the pages of that issue apart while I was reading it. I wanted to do all that they did. I want to travel the world too. Brief Encounter by Simon Winchester was particularly profound - a brief romance on the tracks.

My course in uni has little to do with the arts - I'm going to take software engineering. Mom wouldn't hear of me doing anything unrelated to science :). She has a point, I know that was for you, S_F. But it doesn't hinder me from developing my "arty" side. I'm in the publication board, which is as close as it gets to journalism in the uni I'm in. I write and edit on my whim though.

I'll probably grow up to be a software engineer - not that it's bad; I do enjoy computers and techy stuff. But I believe that the arts - literature, humanities - is where my heart really lies, and who knows? I might cave in someday.

Hmmm...game designer or writer. Fairly standard, but it's the sort of thing I'd like to do.

I'd like to be a writer, maybe extending it into film-making or games production to see the fiction in a more visual medium.

I don't really think I have what it takes to write about deep human condition issues, but I reckon I could come up with some imaginative worlds and plots for fantasy or sci-fi.

Money isn't really the thing stopping me doing this, commitment/laziness is. There's plenty of time in the normal run of things I could spend creating this kind of thing, but I never get off my arse to do it.

I'd like to be a marine biologist, which interestingly enough, I heard that the popularity of marine biology was on the rise. I'd also like to be a writer, a computer game designer or work for a magazine.

    Farm, full time.

I wanna get up a 5:00 in the morning, jump on my combine, and harvest the back 40 acres of corn, shoot a deer from my tractor, plow peanuts, grind cane for syrup, have fall hog killings, inviting friends and family to help butcher, and hang meat in the smokehouse, put up fence around a 100 acre cattle pasture, sow rye seed for the livestock for the winter, cut hay, bale hay, put up hay in the loft, saddle up the horses, and ride to the pond in the woods, and fish for a couple of hours, saddle up and ride back, clean a mess of fish, go looking for the mama cow's lost calf, I can hear it lowing in the thickets, find it, sling it across my saddle-horse, and carry it back to the herd, chase a stray dogie and lasso it, build a roaring fire in the late evening, and sit around it, playing the guitar and singing with the latest harvest in the barn.

That's what I would do, money or no.

I would like to be a National Park Ranger at Yosemite or some other large reserve. Fishing, hunting, hiking, killing poachers. I'll be 37 when I retire from the service, I think I'll try this next, do 20 years with the state and collect another pension. Double dip on the good ol' government and the state. That way I'll be 57 and really ready to retire.

Well, except for the "veterinary" part.

I'd want to be the head of an enormous, powerful, ridiculously rich movie syndicate. I'd get to see all the films we made before they came out, do very little work, and pick which scripts we funded.
