I just made it to Qintarra. I think I'm wearing small oiled leather and weilding a katana. I had creep armor, but I'm too techie (40) for it to benefit. I don't need armor much, I backstab my way through most fights. (It's just me and the Dog)

Is there anything better than oiled leather and a katana?

1.Have you tried small arcane travellers cloak?
    2.Katana???? - WHY?!
have you tried some axes for example,-one of the best axes in the game, the Pyrotechnic axe.

i suggest you don't dismiss magic armors...there are a few that have better stats the the oiled thieves armor...(some I think are lighter)...

a katana is good but there are faster weapons which deal a higher damage...the pyrotechnic axe..for one...I think the balanced sword is slightly faster(which could be made into envenomed or electric)...and so on...

I don't know how good arcane armors would be if you have a 40 tech aptitude. Most if not all of the bonus would be gone by then.

Regarding the weapon, if you have melee mastery and like backstabbing, then get a filament sword. It has decent speed and you'll get tons of critical hits. Especially if you have a high backstabbing skill. Melee mastery means you won't get any critical failures, too.

true you don't get the bonuses from the arcane armor...but it is not the only magic armor available...robes as earlier suggested could work as well...

when I get armor, I only look at the base numbers, not the bonuses...also I look at the weight, the gnommish chainmail is light and effective (and slightly magical i think) so are creep armors and others...

and i think there are some magic armors/robes which have better stats (without the magic bonuses) that the thieves leather...
