Here's an interesting story. I'd played a demo of Fallout and wanted to go buy it, but to do that I'd need to do mail order. I wanted a game there and then, so I picked up a copy of Arcanum and hoped I hadn't been foolish by picking a game I'd never seen in action, soley on the strength of a great premise (industrial revolution in a world of magick)
Boy, was it a pleasant surprise when I saw how similar it was, and how it was made by the same people.
I don't know how long ago that was, because getting stuck into the game has warped my sense of time, but I finished it for the first time last night.
I was a gunslinging explosives expert, and I dabbled a bit in thievery. I acted pretty selfish the whole time so that I'd miss out on a bunch of quests and want to go back and play later. Yet, I always stayed just far enough on the side of good to keep Raven/Virgil and Magnus with me. I was surly, not evil.

I think I'll start some more topics, too. I'm stoked to talk to this about a bunch of people. I'm glad RPGs can be so smart and engaging nowadays!

I read the review in the New York Times tech section. (Having that particular newspaper was a fluke.) When the reviewer decribed the seting, I was entranced. When a dude who must get a preview coppy of every game released said, "I'm addicted", it hit my must have list.

I'm now addicted as well. :D

    P. S. I don't much like RPGs.

Virgil is the one NPC that follows your alignment so you don't have to worry about him. He's a sheep.

It’s good you got Arcanum but you still must get Fallout. It’s an incredible game.

Oh, I'll get fallout sooner or later.

Virgil even stays with you if you do a steep U turn in your alignment half way through. His reaction DID go down. Maybe I accidentally whomped him one.

And hi to the fellow New South Welshman.

Better sooner than later if you ask me. Oh, and when you get it don't forget to patch it.

    Oh, I'm a Sydney Boy.

I'm into the habit of looking for patches as soon as I get a new game, now.

Same for me. I was bored of Nox and wanted something that was new and exciting. I looked at Arcanum, and thought "Well, there is nothing better..." And I was right! After playing it and coming to this forum (and many others) I decided to purchase Fallout to see what all the fuss was about, and I liked it (still haven't finished it, though).

That's the spirit! Though you can have problems with F2 nevertheless. I didn't have any but many people had serious ones even with the patch applied. Poor them. But then it could've been much worse. It could've been me ;)

I loved fallout and Nox, here is another good game if you liked them and you like arcanum. Try out a game called Torment. Made by subdivisions of the same people. Has all the rpg, a great interface and a really different outlook on dying...

A couple other good ones are Baldurs Gate and soulbringer(it's ok, not great)

I'm working a fighter/thief in arcanum right now and it seems to be a great combo. I'll try a mage later and then the dreaded techie (both with at least some thieving I imagine).

This game is starting to look like Diablo, a game you can never finish because there are too many permutations of character types. (That's a good thing...)

No, no, no. You blow things UP with explosives, you burn things DOWN with incendiaries.

Hah, yeah, noone says anythin' bad about technology!!! :x

Anyway, I know what you mean... I was there at the PC CD-ROM Bargain box at my local game shop (poor as usual :D ) and was cleaning trough the entire box, with the personell looking at me strangly. So at last I sorted out some games; Fallout, Arcanum, Icewind dale and some otheres. So I asked the practicant which games he thought was best. He said Fallout is great, Arcanum is cool and Icewind Dale so-so. So I was pondering all three... After checking the backs for a time I picked ARcanum, went home and OH I LOVED IT from the first time I spoke with Virgil (OK, but annoyed me the rest of the game, becuase he always had 3 magic aptitude... :-o

    But yeah, I love it!
