I'm starting up Arcanum again after a long absence (lost the play disc, buying another....grrr), and I've always been fond of Tech driven characters. I want to get the most out of the technical disiplines I choose but not be poorly outclassed by NPCs. I have two concepts that I'm throwing around in my head: the first would be focusing on the Mechanical school of tech and I would definately invest in the trap skill with this character, maybe adding stealth and lockpick, but I really don't want to play a thief character, any ideas on how to take tech mechanical in a different direction? The second would be primarily using Electric devices, melee and dodge would be the order of the day. I'm not sure what backrounds to use either or wiether or not to put any points the fine art of firearms. Any suggestions?
It's fairly common to combine the Mechanical discipline with Smithy. There are quite a lot of found schematics that require expertise in both. And with Smithy comes weapons and armour, so warrior is definitely the path to go here. If you go Electrical opting for the Tesla Rod then Firearms is an absolute must (since it's dependent on that skill rather than melee). As for background, it all depends on what you want to do besides technology. Miracle Operation will give you lots of nice boosts but leave you a physical wreck, Raised by Orcs among other things grant you a bonus to Perception but devastates your Charisma. There is, of course, the IN trick. You don't really need a 19 IN as a techie, all you need is an IN of 9 and a battery of Essences of Intellect (elven traders, wise women and occasionally magick shop clerks and general stores). The Essence of Intellect boosts your IN by 10 for a short time, enough to invest new points in disciplines or craft that particular item. Also, regarding found schematics, they typically require expertise in two fields. This doesn't mean you must invest points, go to the Tarant University and purchase tech manuals instead. Lastly, a techie should always learn how to craft Charged Rings. If you equip two of them, you have a +4 boost to your DX by only spending two points. That, and you can give them to your followers. And this really belongs in the Hints & Tips.
If you don’t want anything given away don’t read the rest of this post. ""SPOILER!"" Spoiler A small tip for a tec person, go to Madam Lill’s place, and complete her quests. Eventually she will send you to retrieve a necklaces (not the Amulet of Beauty) it will give you a 40% boost to your magic resistance and has no magic/Tec alignment. You can just keep it or steal it back from her after completing the quest.
I thought so... But it was nice, anyway, because I thought that the Dorian Amulet worked in that way... That and Cassie's necklace. By the way, my character noticed that the bitch has left Madam Lil's, maybe she's servicing someone?
