The Educator background lets you teach all your followers in skills they possess up to the level behind yours, at the cost of having one less follower than you otherwise would.

Additionally, some followers gain apprentice and expert ranks automatically, like Dog and Waromon.

However, I don't think any follower will go as high as master, but I could be wrong, my memory is kind of fuzzy today.

Some will. I believe Gorgoth is a Melee Master.
Educator background rules by the way, especially for techies. Gunslingers like Vollinger and Sebastian aren't very combat effective without Apprentice bonus in firearms, and giving them melee weapons seems like such a waste of potential. I'm playing a gunslinger educator right now. Going to invest a bit into melee to teach my other followers to Apprentices. Going to be a kick ass team. One follower less is such a shame though. I can't decide whether to leave Chukka in my all tech team or to replace him with Franklyn Payne to keep the image. Payne's low ST sucks, he can't use any decent gun, but Chukka hates my guts, leaves the team every time I take off the Jewel of Hebe and ruins my role playing by his presence.

I personally find Payne a nuisance. His tech skills are too scattered to be of use by the time you find him, and he's helpless in combat.

I find the best way to prevent followers (like Chukka) from taking a dislike to you over shady activities is to tell them to wait outside. Out of sight, out of mind. Unless of course this moves you too far to the evil side. If you need backup, bring Dog or even Virgil they don't care.

Well, you CAN make him useful. I think he can handle a Warbringer, and until then you can give him a Sharpshooters Pistol or Bronwyck's gun. Or give him something that requires MSR 8, he won't screw up too much with a Charged Accelerator Gun or a Tesla Rod. Just don't leave him his Old Mary. Don't know who he stole it from, but he absolutely can't use it. According to all knowing Shadygrove, this is actually what all Payne's stories are about- he can never use his Old Mary.

Hey Solaris, I heard you complain about how much bullets you have to have to operate the mechanized gun. Well, here's your chance to change it's bullet consumption to 1! Here:http://arcanumedit.couchpotato.net:5678/?item=6124
It's a very easy to use weapon editor. You can change a weapons' stats in four simple mouse-clicks. Knock yourself out. :p P.S. change the minimum strength to 7 for Franklin Payne.

But that wouldn't be a fair play, would it ;)
P.S. If I download it, does it take the effect immediately, or only after you start a new game?

There's nothing to download, except the weapon proto which takes effect immediatly.

THe Educator option is great. But, you need to get expert in Persuasion which gives you an extra follower.

    Hi Bobo, welcome aboard.

The normal folower limit is 6, CH 20 = 5 + 1 for Expert persuasion. The Educator gets one less. Five is not at all a bad thing.

Educator rules, especially for gunslingers. In fact, it is pretty much the only way to turn Vollinger and Franklyn Payne into worthwhile fighters. Training the followers to Apprentice in fighting skills makes up brilliantly for having one follower less. Oh and by the way, I think Caladon Crusader chain gives you +1 follower above the limit if you're magick oriented.

Well, it should do, although that has never worked properly for me. I've heard that one is bugged. Oh well, nevertheless it's a good piece of armor ...

You don't need to use it. If you have it, and you become an expert or master, your followers will automatically get that skill at one value less than you have. If you are expert, they are apprentice. If you are master, they become expert.

Thanks! That makes things easy then! I agree that the one less party member sucks though. This is the first time Ive played the game and my impression is that this is a background best taken once you have some experience with Arcanum. Oh well, Im level 18 and Im not restarting now ;)

    Thanks again! :)

No worries. You'll be fine. Just get persuasion mastery and max charisma and you'll have more followers than you'll ever need.
