A few of you might remember me posting a thread about an ancient PC game called "Alone in the Dark" a few months ago. I posted some screenshots and talked about how ahead of its time it was. The game is a horror/adventure set in the 1920's with a lot of H. P. Lovecraft referances like the Cathulu cult and Dagon. As stated in the previous thread, (Search if yer interested.) The game was one of the first ever to use real 3D.

Now, why do I bring this up again since the intrest wasn't exactly overwhelming last time? Well, it seems that now they're making a movie out of it!

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0369226/

Unforunatly, the trailer does not bode well. The only thing that really seems to have anything to do with the game is the name of the main character. Other then that its got no connection to its roots what so ever. Don't you just hate it when that happens?!

man, FUCK alone in the dark! that is some played-out ghetto ass shit, motha-fukka!

when pc-gamer released all of those full versions of old games on its demo disk a while back i completely fucked up my old computer installing alone in the dark. when i was setting it up in ms-dos, it asked me some "wondows stuff" when i was done. i remember clicking through as fast as i could, and the last two boxes i read were "run automatically when starting windows?" and "restart computer now?" and like a complete fucking n00b i clicked yes to both. so i was stuck opening a broke-ass ghetto piece of shit horror game that crashed every time i turned my computer on. i finally figured out that i could enter windows in safety mode, and when i did, did i think to change the settings? NO! i decided i'd just delete alone in the dark completely, even though windows was still counting on running it every time i started my computer. this caused my computer to completely crash every time i turned it on. it got to the point where i finally figured out how to install an older version of windows on it just to recover all of my old text files, before i finally took the computer out back and beat the shit out of it with an aol installation disc, (errrr, actually we sold it for what we could get for it after it was deemed irrecoverable by my techie friend). so thats the story of how i completely ruined my second computer. i think it had 450mhz and an 8 gig hd, and an 8mb video card, so it wasnt amazing when i ruined it, but it had been top of the line when i got it in 1998, (though immediatley rendered obsolete when they came out with pentium 3s the next month). oh well, i sure learned my lesson there. i was such a stupid 15 year old.

Dude, just cuz you were a douche and decided to ignore all the options and click through as fast as you could, doesn't make the game bad. Besides I empathize with the game. I get left alone in the dark every night, so I feel somehow closer to the game.

Damn dude, you could've just edited your msconfig file so it didn't try to start up the game everytime.

yea... Sleek, I'm 14, and even I coulda fixed that problem... but anyway! just a tip that I've learned over tyme: do NOT ever install a game from a demo disk, full version or demo, don't!! those disks are bad news!! they cut parts off of the programs and remove 'not needed' files so they can fit it all on one disk...

Hehe, yeah Sleek. You can't blame the game for that.

I doubt it. At least not the game I'm talking about. There is a new Alone in the Dark game for the consoles that was later ported to the PC, But from what I've heard its trash. The game I'm talking about is almost as old as you are. :p

Oh yeah, yet a new movie based upon a computer game. Horay...

I've got a pretty strained relationship to movies based upon computer games, since they never reach the potential they could have had if the producers didn't decide to completely fuck things up. Look at Resident Evil, for example. While not really that bad, it could had been a whole lot better if they had followed the storyline of the first game, instead of turning it into the zombie hackfest it became...

Streetfighter and Mortal Kombat just plain suck, but so does the very idea of turning beat 'em ups into motion pictures... Super Mario Bros... I won't even begin.

I haven't seen Final Fantasy though... but I can't associate good old FF to a freaking Space Adventure, so I'm a bit suspicious to that movie...

Let's just hope that Alone in the Dark will be better than those. I doubt it, though...

Alas, Even tho I loved the original game I fear that Alone in The Dark will be the worst game-movie ever. Acording to most people on IMDB the director is one of the worst idiots ever to work in Hollywood, and thats saying a lot. The trailer also looks like complete shit. IF they had stuck to the originals story and embellished the movie with Lovecraft lore as they did in the game, then it could be awsome. But that will never happen.

I've got similar concerns about the Mech Warrior movie thats also in production. The director of that one was they guy who did "Eight legged freaks" which I haven't seen but also looks like complete garbage. From the press release, it basicly sounds like its going to be a teen movie, exept the teens are driving 75 ton mechs. *shudder*

Who in their right mind would give that kind of hardware to a teen anyway? Bah!

think of what would happen if one of the girls was on her period while driving that thing... it'd be hell for everyone!! you'd have no opponents to fight cause she'd scare'em all away!! :) and I like Mortal Kombat! all four of them!! (ok, the plot kinda died, but they're funny!) Street Fighter was kool, I haven't seen Eight Legged Freaks, but it looks like crap... and while I agree making a movie out of a fighter game is bad, those movies were so lacking they were just awesome. And most games, if you look at them, have little to do with the original game, this is shifting the topic a bit, but look at this: Spawn was almost identical to the comics, but the script and story were written by Tod McFarland, who, for those of you who don't know, wrote Spawn in the first place... you have to have the original writers do the movie, but with games that rarely happens because they are gamers, not movie writers... :D  :D

The Mortal Kombat and Streetfighter games were great! Ah, the joys of gamepud thumb...Everyone knows the movies sucked, but apart from Resident Evil I can't recall any game being made into a half decent movie. And I don't care how much of Angeline Jolie you can see in Tomb Raider either.

I think the Street Fighter movie I saw was terrible but I liked the two Mortal Kombat movies; they were very funny!

Tomb Raider was decent, Streetfighter was good, and so were the couple Mortal Kombats I've seen (at least three :D :) :D ) the movies had like no plot what-so-ever, but the fighting was pretty funny...

They were HORRIBLE movies. That's like the reason I don't like most SNES games, the side-scrolling lack of plot! Mega Man X I kind of liked, but still this stupid hit everything, if it breaks or blows up, it was bad thing is idiotic.

I'll admit it wasn't as bad as as Tomb Raider, aka softcore porn with guns, it had less plot than an episode of Pokemon, and the action sequences in SF 2 were alright, but it still isn't a movie I would see more than once, maybe twice if I had absolutely nothing else to do.

The Alone in the Dark that was released on the Playstation sometime last year was a pretty cool game. If you liked it, I highly reccomend picking up Silent Hill. I eat that scare factor shit up for breakfast.
