Since the new troika game is an FPS with rpg elements, I started thinking what exactly do I have against them, since I play Quake III Arena like a maniac. Once I started thinking, it realized that I spent some of my best gaming days playing FPS'

    My top ten list:

    • 1 Doom
      2 Heretic
      3 Quake III
      3 Castle Wolfenstein (the original)
      4 System Shock 2
      5 Duke Nukem 3d
      6 Rise of the Triad
      7 Blood
      8 Shadow Hunter
      9 Half-Life
      10 IGI

Notice that most of these games are old. Does that mean that they don't make good FPS games? Or am I weird? I don't know. (I didn't add Deus EX in there cause I couldn't stand the graphics)

With titles Like DOOM III, HALF-LIFE II and Operation Flashpoint 2 on the horizon, the FPS scene definitely doesn't look glum. Developers are however, not making more sole multiplayer games, pressing more on the single player campaign. There are many statements that the whole multiplayer hype is dying. I find this VERY hard to believe.

    It's estimated that:
With such winnings it's unlikely that multiplayer is going anywhere but up.
For some people this has become more of a hobby. It's their job.
Can't blame them while looking at those $$$.

The community is ALIVE, mainly due to tournaments, cannot say the same for CRPG communities which die off after a few years if no sequels are made.

So my conclusion is that I will probably like the new Troika Vampire game, because I just realized that I love FPS games and as long as I don't shoot babes in thongs, healing myself with burgers and falling from 5 stores without taking any damage, I enjoy them.

I like FPS too, Jinxed. (although my list of favs is newer than yours)

Medal of Honor (the newest one, not those old shits)
    N.O.L.F. 2
    Max Payne

However, I think that FPS and RPG (type things) should be left seperate. I will not play a FPS RPG. That's just too many damn syllables to type. I also don't necessarily like FPS's better/worse than RPG's.

Well, I've enjoyed the following FPS's myself...as always, in no particular order.

    1. Deus Ex
    2. System Shock 2
    3. Half-Life
    4. Red Faction
    5. Ghost Recon
    6. Aliens vs Predator 2
    7. Unreal Tournament
    8. Nothing yet
    9. Nothing yet
    10. Nothing yet

As you can see, I can't think of any games to fill the last 3 positions, mainly because FPS's aren't a staple of my gaming diet.

I only play a few FPS games since i don't get to play internet multiplayer games due to my parents restrictions. But Half-Life is pretty cool, especially Team Fortress Classic which i've played at school and on my friends computers. (i wasn't supposed to use the school network, but we didn't get caught)

Aliens vs. Predator and Aliens vs. Predator 2 were sweet games. They were pretty scary too, in the marine missions, in the dark, with that beeping motion sensor. Creepy.

I've had both Alien vs Predator games, Red Faction too. But they only lasted a short while. Not much replay value.

    I guess I've played q3 most, but that's because it's online.
Quake 4 is gonna happen. But... I'm really unsure how it will work out.

I played AvP 2 round a mate's house a few months ago, pretty good. Although most of the alien attacks were completely out of the blue and frankly quite scary, you could predict a lot of them through triggers such s you turning on the power, accessing a computer console, or doing something else important.

Oh yeah, the buggers almost ALWAYS came at you from the air vents. ;)

    Regards,
    Morden

FPS is just like other genres for me. It has titles I've liked and ones I've not. There have only been two that I have liked a lot, UT (and then UT2k3) and Goldeneye (in the player vs player mode). I didn't like Doom or Quake at all. I liked Duke Nukem, but only really as a short term thing. I always thought I'd like Heretic or Rune for their fantasy style stuff, but never really gave them much of a try.

I don't know anything about this Troika one. I'd not heard of it before now, but sincerely hope it's not related to the Vampire: The Masqerade abominaton I bought a few years back.

It's the same setting. That's about it. There is no info about this game available anywhere (except the announcement and interview). Even Troika's PR was at a loss when I asked her. But I hope I'll be hearing from them soon.

Edit: I find it really strange someone would dislike DOOM. That game was a real revolution and it set most of the standards of todays FPS games. When it came out, there wasn't anything like it. It also started the whole multiplayer thing.

Umm, hello? TIMEFRAME CONSIDERATION PLEASE? With that logic, maybe we should compare Final Fantasy I to part X. We've got around 10 years between DOOM and HALO.

Hmm...yep, Doom still comes out on top. Hugely controversial, lots of press, lots of blood and gore, really took gaming into the mainstream.

Also, while we're at it, let's compare 486's to Pentium 4's. Which was more revolutionary? Yep, 486 still comes out on top.

I dunno about the most revolutionary, but i think halo is the far better game, you can't drive cars in doom, not tanks or fly plains. Not to mention the grapichs and sound. And the AI is like ten times better.

just want to see how irritated you can become :D

If you mean First Person Shooter (yeah, I know, I just like to disabbreviate) then 'NAY'. I have found their playability to be low compared to other genres, especially strategy.
